There"s been nothing come to ASRA in regard to this accident. Normally, police contact the ASRA operation manager immediately.

Blue, why do you have a heading of " Gyro Fatality in FNQ" when the news paper said Ultralight?Do you know something the rest of us don"t?Even the ABC are saying Ultralight plane crash.

Graeme, I thought the same thing at first because I was looking at it in new post and didn"t actually open the topic, If you open up the topic you will see the PDF file that Blue attached from todays Cairn"s newspaper, which mentions that it was a Gyroplane.

Hi All,The fatality did involve a gyro. We we"re notified yesterday by the Operations manager of RA Aus. They were initially notified as it was first thought to be an ultralight. It was reported to us as a "RAF" type but we had no details of a RAF operating out of that area. Some digging around revealed it was most likely the gyro from the late Warwick Ladbrooks(Ozzywoz) estate. The "Pilot" was unlicensed and the machine unregistered,we aren"t sure if he had any gyro experience. The police advised he was 22 years old but according to the paper he was 32.The gyro was completely destroyed by fire. ASRA have offered assistance to the police if required.

Sorry you weren"t informed straight away Brian but we had conflicting reports,we didn"t know for sure till late that day. This is an unfortunate tale of someone with apparently large amounts of cash to buy a nice gyro but none for training. The gyro was completely destroyed by fire at takeoff.ASRA has had an AD (2008.02) out for some time concerning fuel filler modifications to gyro"s with internal fuel tanks.Maybe if the owner had consulted a TA and gone through the registration process the gyro would have been properly modified and may not have burnt.

You wonder why anyone nowadays would even begin to believe they didnt need training but here we go. That bloke is someone"s son, husband etc and he leaves a lot of people wondering why.
