  • 914 Rotax turbo

While away on a X country flying trip one of our members suffered a blockage in the oil return line to his turbo. This blockage pumped over a litre of oil into his exhaust system before he realised the problem and shut the engine down. The turbo oil intake and return lines on the 914 run very close to the exhaust which can cause ‘coking’ within the lines. It is most important that these lines are cleaned periodically and the proper cool down procedure followed to avoid problems.
Our member got away with it this time as he had landed when it happened, but in flight I think it would have ended quite differently.
