Great Murray, mine always had some black fretting oil around all the faces. One of the problems is that there are no milled faces for the cap screw heads to mate squarly to, and they keep working loose. I can't complain as I believe that with the hp I continually put through it training, I have had a good run.Every time(twice)the Sub 4 blew up,[:0] I would put old faithfull Hirth back on and keep training!!!!!I had better explain the Sub4 statement. The factory had placed a bearing on a slightly oversized shaft,[:I] and it s**t itself. I was not happy but these things can happen. When I got it back, it only lasted a few hours before totally wrecking itself. The problem this time was whoever put it back together failed to install a major circlip!!![:0]I now have a new Sub4 box that was mated to a later model 120 hp ej-20. That is the combination I flew to Bond Springs.[^]Looking forward to what you come up with.Aussie Paul.[]www.firebirdgyros.com

Dont feel bad Murray, a few years ago when I updated my rotor tie down to a seat belt webbing type, I was waiting to get off on a rain effected strip to start work, I had already had two goes but without sucess and wasnt optimistic about my chances this time however, I was able to take off okay. Approximately an hour later working away busily pushing cows together at around 30 ft AGL, I had an engine out, after a very quick landing and having stopped the rotors I went for my pocket to grab the tiedown but it wasnt there, it was however wrapped very very tightly around the prop shaft. It took two screw drivers and a sharp knife to cut the material away. I now have other arrangements for the rotor tie down !!! Luckily, no damage was done. Glad you didnt do any substantial damage !!You never know how far you can go, till you get there !

Dave, The main indicator without pull down is discolouration of the oil. If the level plug is removed enough oil should ooze out to inspect. If the oil is suspect, then remove it and check the magnetic plug. After the initial "run in" oil change in the gear box, the oil should be clear.Tim McClure
