Fellas I am looking for info on any gyro J 2200 install here in OZ.Rob Malouni has noted Don MacMillan (SP?) from far North QLD has one but experiences problems with overheating.Any other installs...pics and info with respect to suitability for cold weather climate use on a pusher gyro would be appreciated.Thanks.

The one Brian was refering to was not a success. There were cooling problems which was overcome with complicated fan forced air and a larger main jet, and it was direct drive which meant that it could only run a short prop. This considerably reduced the potential to develop useful thrust. There was no allowance on the crankcase for fitting a re-drive. I will see if I can find a photo of the installed engine.There was also some scepticism of the accuracy of the hp figures quoted. The figure of 80hp @ 3200 was exactly the same as that quoted for a 2.2 Subaru, and the Subaru has double overhead cam, electronic sequential fuel injection, four valves per cylinder and sixty years of development behind it. The Jabaru is a single cam two valve pushrod motor with a single small throat carburettor. When it was all said and done, the in air performance was something akin to that of a 503 Rotax.

I"m no technical brain but to me, if it hasnt a re drive /gearbox, its not worth playing with, just going to bring disappointment . I know the improvement going from to a higher ratio gearbox, it wasnt a big jump but the extra thrust was certanily measurable.I"m even entertaining the idea of going from 2.62 to the Autoflights 3. something, would give the old warp drive something to think about, ;D should run about 24 degrees pitch at least.

G"Day Fellas,The Jab people (Don) claims now the "Fine Fin"d Version" with larger than 1 sq ft oil cooler and cowlings directing air etc may be possible to do a pusher gyro install.85 gg"s claimed at 3300 rpm and they spin 60 inch props.Jabiru Pacific I think it is...bloke over in the US has had a fair bit to do with gyros and trumpet type air rams/cowls etc on these engines.Should have some news on a J 2200 gyro install in the next couple of months. I am advised if cooling is no longer an issue it will come down to the THRUST TEST...if it gives 270/280, then it"s a 503, if it gives 320, its a 582.It weighs about the same as a 582, so if it gives thrust figures higher than this then it may be viable???Mitch.

G"day Brian,My suspicion is that the prop won"t change much, the engine will just rev higher. You would go to the higher ratio if you wanted to access more horses (thats if the max hp of the engine is above where you currently run it.)CheersFred
