The problem with big bike engines is the gearbox being part of the motor ie: more bits & pieces wizzing around & fitting a prop hub. I've said it before - what about a jet-ski engine ? Polaris & Kawasaki make them up to 130hp , all alloy with no gearbox . I have heard of a Harley powered gyro , but I reckon vibration could be a problem( plus you would have to get a heap of tatts & wear black leather to fly it )X

Jerry Goodwin and a few others have used BMW engines. The gearbox just unbolts. These were originally designed for aircraft as there badge symbolises. Dennis Alderton used a z900 engine in an ultralight. I reckon Erics on the money although finding a gearbox to stand the hp might be a problem. Most use the jet pump to cool the motor so an alternative pump and radiator would have to be found. The 2 strokes would be thirsty although apparantly the new Yamaha's are 4 stroke. The revs and reduction would be the main problem. Forget 130hp, some are closer to 200hp and there a lot of after market stuff available in the U.S. Even the early kawasaki and yamaha twin motors would be good as they have electric starters already mounted and are 650 and 750cc. These engines are common as they are also used in skidoos. Onya Eric. Ken

I think this is the engine they are talking about on the US forum and someone is setting one up with a NZ gearbox.Better power to weight than a Rotax 4 stroke 914 and they apparently have thousands of them out there. http://www.weber-motor.com/en/produc...ndex.htmlHoges

yeah ill let some one else try them for a couple of thuo hours first, only 83 hp, 50kg without the gear box, and plating ect to mount it, might be good but how about one of these when they come out?Still testing yet but sound good, best power to fuel ever, http://www.revetec.com/home.html
