  • rebuilding an EA81 just for the exersize

I have a couple of EA81"s that I would like to make one from and would like to share the exersize, the motor may or may not end up in an airfame, the airframe may be fixed or rotary winged, who knows what may happen.I have a 89 and 84 EA81 both have the larger valves, both engines are stripped. the crank, rods and cases from the 84 model will not be used because of corosion posibilities. The heads from the 84 are in good nick but one of the heads from the 89 is in a bad way so it will be experemented with first.Heads are currently being degreased and cleaned for dissassembaly. This exersize could take a year or two as I don"t like to rush but some parts of the exersize will be quick depending on how motavited I am.

the heads that have done 300,000ks the valves and seats are in fantastic shape but look a the little crack that goes right through between the two valve seats. Head is RS.The other head that was RS because of the dints has a crack in the alloy between the two valve seats on the right hand side. These are my experemental heads anyway so I am not conserned.Spent a good half hr with my dad on the phone sending him these and more photos, He is a retired old school mechanic. He discovered the cracks and let me know the valves and seats are in great shape especialy for 300,000ks.

I"m going to watch this re build and test flying closely to see if you get the same result I got when I had a very expereinced mechanic re build my EA 81 from top to bottom, before the re build, it could take up to half an hour [not quite

I used to pickup a high mileage suby, grind the valves, and renew rings and hone cylinders. If bearings felt ok i wouldn"t touch them. I had mixed results, some eventually blew a head gasket, and one cracked a block, but the one in my trainer now has a hot cam and ea82 intake manifold and carb. Ive had to lock the dist advance weights, and leave the timing about 35deg. advance. It goes like the clappers, but don"t ask me what the cam profile was.
