  • Exhaust Colour

Running avgas my EA81 burnt a nice grey pipe , but since flying out of Cessnock I've noticed it more of a 'tan' colour , is it the coal dust in the air or the different alt. ( Parkes 1100ft ; Cessnock 250ft)?[?]. According to the temp guage it runs a tad cool 60-70deg , would running cool affect the burning of Avgas?

G,day Eric. Thats strange. If the mixture is good at 1100ft then it would be a tad leaner at 250ft. this should make the pipe a little lighter and the engine should run a tad hotter. Is it the same Avgas?Tim McClure

Tim, Mobil avgas at Parkes , Shell at Cessnock. The tan colour is similar to what you see on the plugs.I'm going to put some bigger main jets in the carbys to rich up the mixture. I've sent the exhaust system to High Performance coatings in Vic to get it ceramic coated. I had fibreglass wrapping around the header pipes but that didnt work well.

Eric....I had a similar experience of exhaust changing darker but unfortunatly it was a result of using avgas and synthetically modified oils and resulted in the cylinder bores getting glazed....i was using mobil one....after honing bores and using a strait mineral oil problem went away....this may be relevent to your problem.

I reckon you might be right ,Mark, I've been using Valvoline Synlube(synthetic) since I put the motor in . I've just drained the oil so I will try some mineral oil next & see what happens. The more I think about it ,the more I think that is the answer. It wasnt causing any problems , I just couldnt understand the strange colour. I ordered bigger main jets today, too, so will experiment with those. when I get it back together. Thanks heaps
