  • Easier start Rotax 582 ???

As most of you will probably know, I have this new gyro with a 582 fitted......Cold starting seems to be a real pain, have tried with full choke......wind,wind,wind, seems to crank over for a bloody long time before fireing up.Have tried without choke.......same probHave tried with adjusting the choke while cranking...IS THERE A BETTER WAY[]Russ....A1014 NT....gods country

A couple of thingsForget the choke/enrichment circuit. Prime with your hand pump, don't forget to squeeze the by pass line, or if you have an electric pump turn it on for a few seconds. If you have clear fuel line going to the carbs you should see them now full of fuel.Then....stick your mouth on the carb breather line and give a good breath into the holes. Do one then the other carb. I'm told to be a real aviator you need a bit of fuel in your system anyway... Don't overdo this - one good blast should do the trick. Then put a foot on the airframe by the wheel and get a technique happening that really gives it a good powerful tug on the line. Set yourself up so you can not get run over if you slip. If your a big guy guess you don't need a flash method. Expect her to start! [^] My 582 starts with one pull of the rope about 98% of the time. Did have problem recently, bit too much breath in the holes.. and a knowing person held the throttle full open, ready to close it immediately after I pulled the handle. That worked a treat too.Dave

Russ, The thing started first go at "Old Station " what have you done to it? Make sure the carby bowls have fuel in them by useing the electric fuel pump for a few seconds, chokes wont work if there is no fuel in the bowls.Leave the throttle OFF to get maximum choke effect.M Barker

No,the carby bowls should stay at the proper level after shutdown,it will evaporate after time but we used to check and empty them before the first flight of the day.M Barker

G'Day Gents and RussRuss do you turn the gas valve of to shut down the engine? I do every time. If you do you will need to prime it again before starting it again.JMTC regards SonnyIntelligence is not a privilege,it is a gift and should be used for the good of mankind.

The biggest problem when starting a cold Rotax seems to be too much throttle. The chokes will not work if any throttle is opened because the choke circuit is a by-pass around the throttle opening and if the throttle is open the air will not by-pass through the choke.Tim McClure

Tim i think you have just solved some of my troubles too then, since i adjusted the idle up on mine it is a pig to start cold, never thought about it till then when i read your post, i adjusted the idle up to about 2300rpm by the adjuster on the carby, if i put it back down should it change it, like i mean because i've basically opened the throttle more would that be enough to make the difference????I'm not an alcoholic, i'm a drunk, alcoholics go to meetingsMark

RussellCheck if the carby slides are both fully down at idle. You should hear them both bottom out when you suddenly bring your throttle back to idle.(engine off of course)Ensure both slides beggin to move together (including oil injection pump cable if fitted)and acheive full throttle.Ensure you are running the right pluggs (B8ES for 582)and spark gap is recommended 0.4-0.5mm.During opperation check your EGT's, if they are equal values, this normally confirms equal mixtures. Temp's between both EGT's should not exceed 20 degree's C, or 36 degree's F. Regular checking of your spark plug colour will comfirm good mixtures (clean grey brown)For piece of mind conduct a Cyclone Bearing clearence test every 25 hour, during plug replacements. This test takes into consideration all bearing wear in your engine, and only takes 5 minutes. This is all very simple and very basic. Apart from the above, using good high octaine fuel and good oil, you should find your engine giving you long trouble free flying.Regards Sam. [8D]

I wouldnt use that on a gas engine! Use WD-40.[]Flying the right side up in Canada
