Sorry if this subject has been done to death in the past but will using Avgas 100 have any detrimental affect on a standard ea81. I have read a bit on it but cant pull a straight answer out of it.ThanksMark.

*In my opinion Mark there should be no detrimental effect whatever. If there was I wouldn't be game to put it in a plane.Tim McClure

G/day Mark,I bought Mark Rolles gyro (G767) which hasdone 1,095 hrs mostly on avgas 100 & i have continuedto use avgas since releaving Mark of his pride & joy.I am reliably told the Ea81 has never sufered any illaffect. Reacently a T.A. took "MY" pride & joy for a test flight & commented on how much "grunt" the motor still had considering the hours it's clocked up.Les.

Hi all,as les points out i had no problems with avgas in the suby motorBut...you are advised by some x/spurts..not to use a fully synthetic oil as it can lead to cylinder glazing...this is supported in the lycombing web site and also rotax say not to use a full synthetic oil in there 912 motors if you use avgas...The main reason i used it was because it is a far better quality of fuel, has a higher octane rating which removed any chance of pinging in a hot climate...has anti vapour lock properties over ulp...was redily available to me and i knew what i was getting. Please note that i did not get any obvious performance increases when i was doing thrust tests in the early days over premium ulp...but did gain around 4 % gain over ulp.The one down side is it will eat and foul spark plugs but as i replaced them every 50 hrs as a precation ..at $16.00 a set this wasnt a problem.cheers.PS...hey les i havent forgotten you...the rotor logs are still coming..or in the mail...soon

Thanks Tim, Les , Mark ,Sounds like I have no reason to worry. I am not a fan of synthetic oils anyway. My car and gyro sit for long periods at times so have always used mineral oils.Mark

Mark,The gyro I have at the moment was owned by Wal Flaks, he ran it on avgas while he had it as he knew some people he could get get it off for a reduced price, it is still tight and runs well after 250 hrs.Cheers,Nick.

MarkI use what is available, ULP or Avgas. I don't do any changes to timing or tuning, just fill the tank and go. I use mineral oil.Avgas will give your fuel lines a shorter life.Ross B

Mark refers to Lycoming and synthetics. It is apparently well known in the GA area that using synthetics in engines that have been run on leaded fuel is a no no.It seems that the synthetics mobilise lead deposits in the lubrication system, which then can obtruct oil passages.IMHO this is what happened to Wal's O 200 at Bond springs, the engine lost compression as the hydraulic lifters clagged up.John EvansThink logically and do things well, think laterally and do things better.
