Great to see you on the forum Chuck, you might remember me, Chopper Reid on the US forum and "down wind turns" .Look forward to challenging your knowledge. Did you get to compete in the unlimited areobatic championships ?You never know how far you can go, till you get there !

Yep, the good old "downwind turn "!! always good for an argument . There was a very good article written in the Pacific Flyer a few months ago explaing the facts very simply. Would be good to re print it here because despite it being written by a FW instructor, its very relevant to us gyro pilots. It was actually tittled "The climbing down wind turn".You make a good point there John about even a 747 turning downwind into a jetstream needing all thrust available to keep the indicated airspeed in the safe margin while it catched up.You never know how far you can go, till you get there !

Yes Brian, I remember that article, it's the first I've seen that made sense, perhaps Barry could get permission to reprint it in Gyro News. I think a lot of the stuff talked about downwind turns is misleading to all of us, let alome beginners.John EvansThink logically and do things well, think laterally and do things better.

I could post a picture of my Gyro after inadvertantly making a downwind turn on takeoff.A 33 degree day with more humidity than I reckoned on proved to be unpleasant. All would have been OK if I didnt fall foul of an anomally caused by a small hill about 900 meters from the end of my strip.I have taken off in this direction over one hundred times and never encountered the sea breeze switching from the left rather than from the right. When confronted with very poor climb, I dropped the nose to gain airspeed, but unfortunately, with the wind blowing far stronger from behind, found that altitude was traded faster that airspeed increased.Problems compound when one finds himself over the next paddock with 200 head of big fat Angus cattle standing right where I want to land!Ever heard of getting behind the curve?Manage to miss cattle(ever seen cows duck?) Now going to land in tussocky paddock, Drop nose to get a little more airspeed, Land fairly hard, all should be OK?Dont use motor cycle shock absorbers, You cant see inside them! Rear righthand wheel strut collapses, what do I see? grass, sky, foot, grass, sky, dirt!walk home, call Jeff Henley Smith and contemplate wheter another Warpdrive or a timber prop, make call to the Mayor to make apologies for councillor Horan at the council meeting tonight.Lesson? Dont try to fit a quick fly into a limited space of time while flying your gyro downwind with motorcycle shocks on the wheelstruts. For those of you who are wondering, I normally fly at least four times a week and have never had this wind come from the direction it did before.....not all things stay the same.Mark.

Mark I'm really sorry to hear about your misshap.Did you damage the rotor blades?Wind and hills are very tricky, no matter no many times we fly in an area every once in a while we get caught by suprise...usually we have a slight built in safety margin but sometimes everything goes to hell all at once. In your case you had enough inertia to get it back on the ground and walk away so good on you.Twice in my career I got caught completly by suprise with decending air in the mountains, both times it was during the run in to a fire retardant drop on forest fires, both times it came without any warning. The first time was in the Rocky Mountains in British Columbia. I was circling above a new fire that had just started to burn about a thousand feet below the mountain top, the bird dog officer asked me if I thought I could do a down hill run at it and get a load of long term retardant on the head of the fire before it really got out of control.. so I said sure and turned left and started the run in over the top of the mountain. Something looked wrong and all of a sudden I realized that the fire had suddenly increased in intensity because the black smoke was just boiling straight up from the fire, I felt the bottom start to drop out as I got caught in the air that was rushing down the mountain into the fire and punched the button to get rid of the load, which should have given me enough lift to stop my rate of descent toward the mountain side.Everything happened so fast from there I still can't really figure out why I'm here typing on this keyboard, my last words to my co pilot was " Oh f.ck " as we went into the black smoke and red fire boiling up the mountainside. It was only a matter of a second or two and the next thing we saw as we came out of the smoke was trees going by on both sides and our wings below the tops, we never hit anything for the simple reason that the gap between trees was due to a crevice on the side of the mountain, the only one in that area. Anyhow that was the end of fire bombing for us that day, even the bird dog crew thought we were dead because we completly disappeared out of their sight when we went into the smoke. All that saved us was getting rid of eleven thousand pounds of fire retardant just in time to arrest the sink rate the rest was 99% pure luck.I know this is not about gyros, however all aircraft react exactly the same and we all can get caught in really dangerous situations when we least expect it.The second time was in the Andes Mountains in South America, but I've bored you enough today so we will let that one sit. Will you all forgive me for yapping about non gyro stuff? And for using naughty language?Chuck E.
