  • Gearbox verses pullies and belt

Can anyone supply factual info re the best value / longevity / etc etc between geared, oiled gearboxes verses the pully and flat belt combo.Perhaps personal experiences etc also. This is for the 85....130 HP engine type.RDC

Hi Russell. My experience, and that of a lot of other Raf owners around the world, with the later Subies ie. the ej series is that they break cranks real easy. The metal used in the ej series crankshaft is quite different to what was used in the ea series. The ea series crank will take considerable side loads, the ej series won't.I reckon that we will see quite a few Sparrow Hawks with the 160 hp ej-25 break some cranks, even with the "steady bearings" that they support the crank with. The Raf has "steady bearings" with the 130 hp engine and still broke a lot of cranks. One other thing is that, with a belt out the rear, if anything comes off, yeah I know it shouldn't, and yeah I shouldna rolled Hybrid either[:I], the belt can come off second best,[:0] and you are looking for a place to land.[]The belt drive is definately smoother. Belts will idle at 600 rpm but the gearbox usually likes 1000 rpm or so.So, for what it's worth, that's my experience.Aussie Paul. []www.firebirdgyros.com

Belts are quieter , probably cheaper and run smoother.[]G boxes are more efficiant and lower in maintanance.[]But intergrated G boxes are the best[}].[rotax 4 bangers[]]PS;belts don't like dusty conditions ether, they chew out pullys real quick[B)].But its easer to carry round a spare belt than a box.The rotax box I had on the ea81 was spoton, after I had a flywheel between it and the crank.[^]Ignorance is bliss............but only till you realise you were.

Are there any aftermarket crackshafts that may be stronger/better than the stock sub's?

Timchick,As Paul said somewhere earlier, the crankshaft breaking problem is perculiar to those running RAF re-drives. It is not a problem with the engine. It is conceivable that a stronger crankshaft would still break under the same circumstances.Tim McClure
