  • Whats Wrong With ASRA ?

Okay, despite the introduction of turn key gyros and instructors using these new gyros for instruction, membership levels in ASRA arent increasing so whats the go ?? We have gyros flying from one side of the country and back without ground support, we have some very pro active instructord taking their new gyros to all parts of the country, lots of TIF"s being done at field days etc etc. Gyros have had a presence at NAT fly now for two years. We struggle to find clubs prepared to hold the nationals anymore.Whats needed do you think ??Where"s the problem....problems ?I for one, would be interested in your views. You can post /email /ring, whatever you like. The ASRA AGM is on this coming weekend and I would like to have something to take along that can be discussed...acted upon etc.

for me personally it is financial i cant afford to purchase a turn key gyro, havent got the ability to build my own and am too far away from a club for the help, cant get one for a hire so now i am looking to ra aus when i got the money again as much as i love the gyros and prefer them as long as im flying im happy. so the ability to hire a plane through ra aus has me sold. i have done close to 30 hours of instruction in the gyro but cant see the value in still paying an instructor to sit there and do nothing.

Dear Brian,See my comments on the thread regarding Burren Junction.I am not so much disappointed that the dues went up, they had to. But I am really irritated that my machine after over 300 hours of operation has to be hung

While I"ve been very interested in getting a gyro and learning to fly the difficulty of getting third party insurance at a reasonable price and the distance I would have to travel to do the training is not helping me to continue. Gyros are reasonably low cost and the amount of space needed to store one can be quite a small area but for the amount of flying I will probably do I may end up opting for calm early mornings and a powered parachute. No where near as versatile as a gyro and initially dearer to buy but I can store it in the shed and get 3rd party insurance with

Thanks for those replies, the relavant bits will be taken up to the AGM for discussion. The insurance is a dificult one, basically, at the moment our fatality rate per hours flown is simply unaccabtable. We badly need the musters to come aboard so we canget those hours way up. Some are doing close to a 1,000 hours a year so it wpuld get those hours up really quiclky. As far as cost goes, theres not much cheaper than a gyro, second hand ones can be had pretty cheaply at times. I doubt we will see gyros for hire anytime soon.Mark, I aknowledge the dificulties regarding the hang test, its not easy by yourself however, not doing a hang test at this time is not grounds for your machine to be eligible for registration. I will see if we can get the medical straightened up, that shouldnt be dificult. The rego and renewal can be done anytime from when the last gyro news arrived till the cut off day, we do need to have a cut off day so sorry but I believe that 3 months is sufficient time. I think forms are available on the web page, havent had a look for a while but I"m pretty sure you can get them there as well as in the magazine.Anyway, thanks for the feed

For me being a newbie and with family commitments it all gets down to safety - gyros have bad press!ASRA has done a sterling job of implementing steps to improve this aspect, with qualified instructors, inspectors, the hang tests and publicising the importance of centre line of thrust, but there is a lot of catch up to be done. I would be asking, what is the next most important aspect to gyro design that influences the aerodynamic stability of gyrocopter? Is it the horizontal stabiliser or is there something else? Is there correlated data

BTW, I have misled you all, figure out tonight show the number of members have increased since 2007 to 2011 by 180. Gyro registrations were increasing slowly untill 2011 and are at a lower level than 2007, no doubt in response to the hang test.?So Brian, If I understand you correctly, you are saying that the membership numbers have increased since 2007 - correct?

Nothing wrong with ASRA! I love how easy it is to fly with minimal restrictions. Imagine what it"s like in other countries. Volunteers represent us and argue our case to the authorities, and usually come out on top. I would gladly pay 10 times the cost of membership and rego. I"ve been a member for 14 years and have seen some great acheivements by the board. I love you guys! When I"m up there having a ball, I sometimes have to pinch myself to make sure I"m awake and it"s not all a dream! I must have been a good boy in a previous life!GOOD ON YOU GUYS!

Good on ya Hatty. Nice to know your still there mate. The only think wrong when you flew over and helped with our hang tests is we didn"t drink enough rum. My hat off to ASRA too, proud to be part of it.
