When i was a young feller on the farm i spent a lot of time on the spanners with the old man fixing something. My first experience with ignition was "hang onto that mate" i jumped "yep she"s got spark" i did get even though later i wired a car coil to the door handle with my brothers help and got a belting for it but as far as i was concerned i was even. Now i wasn"t the average kid either I"d pull my my brothers toys to pieces get the motor wires and battery put a paddle pop stick on the shaft glue a couple of the old mans new razor blades on it of and go trim some hedges. I still got the scar. But what I"m trying to say i had some attention to this detail. I often see fellers standing next to their car scratching their heads, now i"m not saying i can fix every thing but have a good chance at most things. My Gyro has this kind of attention and i"m not expecting every one to understand mechanisms and electrical everybody is gifted at something. But a sound understanding of your machine may help you. Here"s an example that MTO Gyro you"ve all probably seen engine out after take off had a really loud sequel on the pre rotator belt. We have had two that i know of break the bolt on the pulley shaft pully drops into prop. There is a mod for it but looking at it you can see the side loading on the bolt and too much torque. I"ve always given the main pulley a little squirt of silicon and go easy on the pre rotator engine RPM and no problem and put some tape around the bolt shaft and pre flight check it. What I"m trying to say can some of these problems be avoided with a better understanding of the machine and do we share these problems on this site. I have noticed agents have trouble believing you at times what"s your opinion?

Yeah like people riding the clutch at intersections and traffic lights, Or getting into a work ute or hire vehicle and the clutch is gone, you can feel the hot spots on the fly wheel and about 5mm left on the peddle if they can do this to cars god help the Gyros. I recon some of those surges could be vapor lock as some engines ore fully enclosed and hot when landed 5 to 10 minutes cooking then turn around and take off. Seen it happen a few times.

Ok there"s more to say here and i don"t giva wot the service authorities say. I fly the MTO 3 and find it quite reliable but like all machines they require some attention to detail. I"ll list some observations if not already mentioned in the AD"s. The pulley on the rotor pre drive has a bolt that side loads and we believe is cracking and drops the pulley into the prop I"ve seen it happen twice. There is a directive to put heat shrink over it and check it periodically i use vinyl tape. The rudder cables need to twang with pre flight check if you let these get too slack the rudder will oscillate violently in flight adding more stress to the cables... don"t want that. The Cavalon has a cowl over the engine with thermal fan cooling. I have seen takeoff landings with with fuel locks by heating no a big deal as it clears after take off, but i would like to know this problem was fixed by insulated fuel lines. Our wind shields crack because they ore not heat formed. They are supplied as flat perspex. I know one MTO fella that got his made local and never had a problem after. The Cavalon also gets cracks on the canopy perspex near the door air vents a little stress rubber relief and preforming. Not bagging our machines as overall they are very reliable just these little things to be aware of. Maybe the Gmbh factory could review these things too. Like most things i"m generally considered an idiot and what the hell do i know...no loss cause i don"t give a toss. Oh and that last rotor.. i can show you what happened to it if your interested.Mike.

And another thing... If you"re at altitude and it"s reasonably cold and you wannna descend don"t shut your throttle. You can cold freeze your engine, yep your cylinders can suck in on your pistons and you get silence. Ease your throttle and gradual descend... yeah i didn"t think about it either until me CFI gave me a touch up about it.Mike.

Yep, I tell my students, treat the gyro how you should treat a woman. Be gentle and patient and you"ll get what you want out of her What Max? You take your gyro to the pub and get it drunk then have our way with it on the way home in the back of the EH? :P
