Thanks Julia ........ you have no idea. What else could you expect from a bottled "REDHEAD" who can not give any of us the actual formula to calculate our carbon emissions foot print. As for those protesters I just wonder how many of them are like the GREENS Senator that live with their head in a solids/gaseous cavity.

"It seems the old Ranga is determined to destroy Australia ( except for Canberra ) ."Canberra was a big mistake. Now 4th generation public servants, out of touch with the real world. If you got paid to stay home and have kids, and the more kids, the bigger the pay off, who would you vote for?Sofa loafers are probably the biggest group of voters now. And getting bigger all the time. Old Ranga did the math. 242 cattlemen versus 6 million sofa loafers. Now Canberra is able to hand out Pink batts, give tax deductions for computers if you have a kiddie etc, so is it too much to ask Canberra to put out an incentive for abattoirs in the NT? Live animal export is exporting jobs. Send the meat over either chilled or frozen. And

Building an abattoirs in the NT won"t solve the problem . All that will do is put the price of meat out of the reach of the Indonesians ( average wage is $2 - $3/day ) .

echo you may be right. The problem with the international population is that they look at a map of Australia and see that they could put their whole country into the profile many times over. What they don"t understand is that there is only a 50km ring (on average) around the coastal perimeter which is actually habitable. Any thing inside that is hard work and who wants that?So the capital cities continue to fill and we now have a problem.

Graham,I appereciate your thoughts, but the misinformation from the government has convinced many people who are not in the trade that there are other ways to skin a cat. in this case there isnt, The Indonesians have other places to get their moo cows, those cattle producers in the north have little option other than the live trade, that"s why the trade exists.Brazil would be happy to supply the 530,000 head per annum trade to Indonesia. You have to realise that the indonesians take cattle up to 350 kg, they then feed them until they reach killing weight, 500 - 600kg, then run them through the abbatoirs to feed their population of 240 million people. Many in the cities have electricity not so in the rural areas, here lies one of the problems of infrastructure and logistics. The live trade is very important to 240 million Indonesians. The confronting imagery on the 4 corners piece, largely centered around one abbatoir that had "hired out" the facillity to a group who obviously had little experience in either handling cattle or sharpening knives. this is a fact and is clear that animals australia used the most confronting footage availiable in order to trigger the most emotive response by the Australian public. 4 corners was made aware of the hireing out of the abatior only a few days after the story aired but ignored the information that could have softened the high handed response that the federal govenment has imposed on not only the northern cattlemen, but every cattle producer in Australia. There is a very high probability that cattle prices will drop up to 40% for every producer in Australia if the live trade is not resumed within the next couple of weeks, depending on how many cattle come down from the north instead of a ride on the love boat. This government has absolutely no concept of agriculture or its importance to the economy of this great country. They refuse to pay compensation for the problem they have created and have made the MLA the bad boys because they refuse to give 5 million to ease the burden of those affected by the trade freeze. The money that they have demanded from MLA is from a levy that is paid ($5 per head) on the sale of evey beast

Sorry, not enough room on the last page, Anyway, the $5 levy is paid on every sale of every cow and is a grower levy that is used to market Australian beef to the rest of the world, thats why we sell beef into south korea, japan, russia and anywhere else aussie beef goes.If the marketing money is spent to cover the **** of an inept government there is no money to market our product overseas and it is hard enough to sell Aussie beef with the dollar at 105 cents!60% of our beef goes overseas and the indonesian market is ahuge part of that export, to loose the live trade will crash beef production in Australia, it last happened in 1974 and back then there wasnt the same exposure that agriculture has to the banks as it has now.The ramifications of this stupidity is almost unimaginable as the loss of income for farming families will push many over the brink after 12 years of drought and the impact on the banking system will reach far past our farmers, the cities will shake!Although the treatment of those cattle is confronting it is nothing compared to the damage the government is blindly creating in the name of picking up the votes from the Animal lovers, hold onto your hat!Mark.
