Yes that's rite.....had to pull it down twice, kept stretching the head, cyl bolts and getting leaking heads etc etc....anyway the guy was a ******, could have been the prob. He replaced it bowt 2 years ago as he was not permitted to train with it or somin like that. However a guy that used to work for me bowt 4 years ago, met a traditional owner Kimberly way, fantastic lady, they live north west ozy, reeeel remote, well he built a gyro with BMW engine same as, it was still going strong when I last flew out there bowt 14 months ago. Don't get there to often, as organising avgas for me out there is a real problem, and tiger country like you wouldn't believe, longest leg for me is almost 4 hrs, absolutely nowhere to put it down safe.On alight machine they seem to go OK, apparently BMW also make the same engine aero certified ?????? Also paul ( my guy ) said that a certain year model was the best one, can't remember which one tho.Hope this helps.......Russ....A1014 NT....gods country

Some years ago Jerry Goodwin was working on using the R100, even importing some Kreuser 4 valve heads for them. I have a pair.I believe Tim has had a bit to do with one of them.My understanding is that in a gyro they have a cooling problem in our climate, but the Europeans seem to use them a bit.As I've stated elsewhere, I believe the water cooled K series is a better proposition, it's bullet proof and the power output is better. It seems the market for these engines is pretty flat as they are so reliable.John EvansThink logically and do things well, think laterally and do things better.

Thanks for the good info PT! The R1100 engines are an improvement on the R100 series, notably the cooling problem appears to have been solved by oil cooling accounting for 65% of the coolimg. The fuel injection gets over the strangling effects of carburretors. The downside is cost, has anyone added it all up and converted to $AUD?BMW loaned me an R1100GS for a couple of Safaris, a great all rounder, after belting the thing around on some pretty dreadfull goat tracks near Lake Dalrymple we were riding around the Sports models running down the Gillies Highway into Cairns.John EvansThink logically and do things well, think laterally and do things better.
