  • Sparrow Hawk

I"ve just had a phone call from a guy who is interested in buying sparrow hawk G1021 He has no time to travel to see it and asked me to inquire if anyone knows it"s history. He mainly wants to know if it"s been rolled. The present owner apparently does not know it"s history.

The one Ian played with was owned by a Victor Bursa who helped me wire my new house and one day during the wet he touched a live wire and died. I trained the new owner who took the craft south. She was as stable as a rock flying ship and built like a brick s@#t-house. Very strong. Would be good on a rough old farm. (I can just see it parked in a hay shed)

Hi Max,I know about the 3 SparrowHawks which were build in Wollongong and sold by the SparrowHawk agent, Greg Williams but I am guessing this is one that has been imported S/H.

Had been repaired by Rod Tor after rotor strike accident during training.

Gents,G1021 is a Sparrowhawk modified RAF 2000 that was imported by Ken Wright direct from the states. EJ22 engine that the yanks modified with a new manifold and carby. This was before they understood the Soob electronics.I test flew it on arrival and then trained Ken in it. We had a rollover incident during training in gusty headwinds when Ken "forgot" to apply forward stick when the nose popped on takeoff. Due to his size, he also had right stick applied at the time. It reared onto the tailwheel and when I took over and countered with forward left stick, the stick jammed against his left thigh and the right roll continued until the blades hit the ground to the right rear. This impact threw the gyro back onto its wheels where it remained. Damage: rotors, upper mast, tall tail mount and rudder/fin. Repaired by Rod Torr. Last time I saw it it flying on RAF blades modified with a Patroney hub-bar that incorporated the original RAF adjustable side to side pillow block. No other damage whilst it was here. Ken had an engine out due to a failed component in the distributor and he put it down without damage. That was on the same flight that he lost his ASI on takeoff! So a forced landing due engine failure with no airspeed.Aircraft sold due to Ken"s ill health.Haven"t seen it since it left here.Waddles.

Thanks Alan, I"ll inform the interested buyer. I often have trouble with people too big and control movement problems. I offer to cut of a leg but they"re not keen.

Something to be said about a centre stick with upper horizontal bar and two handles. Robo helli. ect. Iv"e had at least three situations when a female student/passenger has closed their legs on take-off and obstructed the control stick. I had coax her legs open.
