  • Oils & 912's

Talking to Bert Flood the other day & the lady there said that they are now recommending Aeroshell or MobilExtra 4 T instead of Shell Advance VSX etc cause shell are now putting in more foaming stuff or something of the like into the shell oil.

Brian, from experiance, [ not mine] i know the 912 will run happily for thousands with "milk" in it.Milk, be"n oil that has NEVER been above 30/40C, and the condensation has turned it to milk.Obviously i advised he should ductape his oil cooler closed wen its below 20c ambiant**,[ he"d been flyn round for 2 years like this] to be sure that at sum stage in the day, the oil temp gets up round 90/100c, to cook the water out.Iv hada inflite cooler flap i can regulate at any time.Closed for general puttn round and full open wen yardn up.**The water n oil heat exchanges are pretty equal at keepn temps down.No matter wot your do"n, the 2 temps rise n fall together.BUT, the only one you gota be sure actualy warms up in cold air is the oil.Alota people insist on haven water thermostats. Waste of time, and even a hinderance. It dont matter how cold the water is run"n at, [ solong as it aint frozen] coz its only cooln the heads, not the barrels, so for efficiancy, the colder the better.Iv dun full [miserable] days wen iv never seen the water temp off the bottom of the gauge.Bout the oil type, iv tryed a few breeds, penrite, penzoil, fuchs,........... all seem to do the job no wurrys, solong as its 4stroke aircooled scooter oil with NO additives, like moryes.Iv gon for the fuchs stuff coz its made by people with the same interlectual qualities as the ones who built the 912.

Brian,Birdy is spot on regarding keeping the oil temp at 90 to 100 being important to burning off the moisture and long life. I have now changed all of the 912s that I look after to the AeroShell 4 for Rotax. Reasonably priced and you can order the cartons from most aviation fuel suppliers or online. I have noticed that for a given OAT it also appears to run cooler than the Shell Advance VSX and is

I"m very aware of oil temps. both high & low & Rosco was saying there is a thermostat type controller available for the oil temp. Jacko has one and reckons its great, saves worrying about flaps / tape etc/ My oil cooler has tape over more than half of it & the temp still only gets to 60/ 70 C which is a bit cold to burn off the moisture.Sounds like Aeroshell could be the go. Floods do recommend the areroshell. Mobil would be okay but its not readily available like shell oils.

ok i understand condesation and "milk" my question is that a condition of a dry sumped motor oil tank not being warmed with the rest of the engine as in a wet sumped motor.

Decided to go with the Mobil extra 4 T being its designed for a gearobx aswell as an engine.Put more tape on the oil cooler & its getting the temp up to 90 so it looks as if a bit more tape will do the job.

Thanks for that information Adrian. I wasnt sure it contained the gearbox aditives !!With coolant, dont mess around, just stick with Castrol & be done with it.
