Just lost the contents of me pewtar ( 16 mth old Mac pro ) has had a hard drive stroke.............lost the lot.So...........do some thing via an external hard drive, and do regular backups, to say i"m p1ssed off is an understatement.Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Russell, I had the hard drive crash on me a couple of years ago. It had all my flying /Firebird plans pics etc as well as a lot of family pics. About 80 gig worth. I had to pay to get it back and fortunately I got 99% recovered.Aussie Paul.

Yea............pewtar is heading south to some co, there is a chance they may recover my contents, "apple" tecko guy says my meltdown is a bad one, so don"t hold me breath.......rekins 30% recovery at best. Let"s see............I"m useing our 2nd pewtar here ( wifes ) a toshiba, windows 7, think i might get another toshiba, and link them together from time to time, as well as an external hard drive system. Missis dilly dallies on the "net", and picking up viruses is going to happin to her one day, hence his and hers pewtars. From day one, i was not overly impressed with the "mac", previous yrs useing windows 7 on a toshiba seemed better overalll. Mate has a "Leader" pewtar, does all a toshiba $2000 does, at half the price. ( "Mac" cost $2300 ) Useing "Mac" causes all sorts of grief trying to get some "apps" onboard, all "apps" link with windows no probs........apple tie you into apple, which is a pain. To get around this problem one has to load into a mac another program as well.......windows 7.........so we have 2 products competing in same pewtar...........this i was unaware of when i got the mac.................so windows only it"s going to be with new pewtar

Disco - cloud? You"re happy to let ALL of your important info be stored in some cloud??Yanks can"t be trusted. (there"s one good one in a Russian airport at the moment trying to put his life back together directly associated with this nonsense)I back up and give the disc to my wife

Let"s see............"Russ,all computers will have hard drive crash at some time. Thus Apple supply Time Machine. Connect an external drive ($100) and click go on Time Machine, and you will always have a back up.Super Duper is another program you can buy for a back up that will run your Mac.Data Rescue is probably the best recovery software if the fault is software. (I would first use Disk Warrior, it writes a new catalogue tree and often gets things going)If it is hardware, it is tougher. Could you hear a click click click? that indicates a broken spring on the read write head, and that is where it gets expensive. They open the hard drive in a dust free place, and put the platters in a new enclosure I have seen a very dead disk removed from computer, slammed onto desk, hooked up to external power supply, and all info copied to a new hard disk.I have Tech Tool Pro which runs a SMART check on the HD to warn of impending problems.Mac Air and Mac pro now use solid state memory, so should give better life than a spinning HD.You can buy the Air for $1100 or an iMac for $1400. I bought an iMac fusion model which has a solid state memory as well as HD, and it is magic. Fast start up and fast to use.Programs are written specifically for the Mac or the PC, so yes you have to look carefully if you have a favourite program. At least you can run Windows in parallel on your Mac, and have best of both worlds. Try running a Mac program on a PC…I have never needed to run a PC program, so have not forked out $400 for Windows.(as against $30 for Mac OS)They should have slipped a new hard disk into your computer and you would not have to push the missus to one side.Sophos is a highly regarded anti virus program for business, that can be downloaded for free for the Mac. The only baddies I have seen, have been for Windows, which I have dealt with so I do not pass onto PC mates.I do not like the OS Apple uses on phones, and the move to make the Mac OS like the phone experience is dumb.Another place you can back up for free is Dropbox. (Another cloud thing)Good luck, most frustratingGraham

Update.............apple guys delivered the "expected" bad news...................as good as ro*ted is the hard drive. They can get another specialist company to retrieve "data".......how much data they will get

toshiba in a Mac........unrealI think there are only 3 HD manufacturers in the world now. Rebadging hides this.Samsung make some of the most important parts of the iPhone.
