  • Laying Up a Stone Wall. Part 2.

Gents,This series of pics shows, how joints are filled with mortar. Also shows the galvanised steel ties laid in mortar between the stones and back into open cavity of wall, which will be back filled with rubble rock and conc blend.Image Insert: 56.64 KBImage Insert: 48.1 KBWhen mud (mortar) sets-up or goes off enough, the mud can be pressed back into the joints using a painters spatular/trowel or a butter knife will do. Be careful not to dislodge stones near top of wall, by placing a downward pressure on stone to hold its position, whilst pressing the joint.Image Insert: 53.98 KBWhen the mud goes off further (grainy consitency) you can start roughing out the joints. That is cutting away the mud in the joints to the desired depth. If you leave this process too long your wrist will suffer, if you do it too early (mud still green) it can be messy and stain the stone. Image Insert: 52.42 KBPic shows mud cut out and lightly brushed with a paint brush through the joints. The trick is to try and ensure your joints are fairly even and that the joints dont close up. This stops the perceived flow of the joints.Image Insert: 57.54 KBwww.thebutterflyllc.com
