  • The engine a lot of us started with...

The Mac drone engine. I had never seen a pic until now.

A cousin travelling the US and Canada sent me this pic.

    Aussie Paul.

I believe they had a 'ton of grunt' Paul but were not too reliable.

There were only two types of McCulloch pilots - those that have had an engine failure and those who were about to.
Dyno tests proved the 90hp to be closer to 70hp, and the 70 HP was closer to 50hp. The perceived performance was from the light weight of those early gyros. Light weight is still the biggest performance advantage to this day, far more so than the US method of simply adding more horsepower.

I've got my original 1835 VW with tapered fitting chrome ol. hub, wooden prop. magneto ect. Plus enough bits to make a complete benson style gyro. with no battery, no pre. rot. very lite wheels. I recon I can get the weight way down. Just use it as a 'beach hack'. Re-live the old days! Love the sound of those four straight pipes idling. Lucky I live in the bush.
