Can someone tell me how you go about getting permission to fly higher than 500"AGL? I know it"s all about to change, but, until then if I"m flying over patches of tiger country a bit of height wouldn"t hurt.

Hatrack,ASRA successfully negotiated a new endorsement that allows you to fly above 500" and access aerodromes last year. I suggest you contact the Ops Manager or your nearest Gyro CFI so you can receive the necessary training/assesment so that you can have the endorsement added to your ASRA Pilots certificate.
