Ok all, forget the handling stability on the ground and in the air. There is a very good engineering reason. Well I think it is anyway!!! LOLAussie Paul.www.firebirdgyros.com

Hi Lloyd, the only way to really know is to measure the COM.[?]BUT near enough is good enough. The really large offsets,10" plus, and no effective h/stab are the problem ones.[!]Aussie Paul.[]www.firebirdgyros.com

quote:Originally posted by Firebird PaulNick, your rotors are too short. Get Jack to make a hub bar that is at least 2' longer. I think that your prop pitch maybe too course, what is the prop diameter?. Is your machine the one that Wal flew at Lameroo a few years ago? He would have won the noisiest machine!!!!! All that power making noise instead of thrust!!!!!Aussie Paul.www.firebirdgyros.comIt is the one that you speak of, and the noise levels have not abated.. I have discovered a new way to keep it quiet - don't start it up.Point taken on the Hub bar, I will need to modify the mast as well to accomodate the extra length so I don't get a ground strike at the rear when I pull the brakes on after landing. Wal has offered a loan of his hub bar which is about 1' longer for a trial to see if it improves the situation as well as his own, the knuckles on his hub bar keep striking the prop and he wants a shorter hub bar to avoid recurrence. The prop is newish, another Jack Allan special, 55 x 28, shortened by some shrubbery to 53.5 x 28 now. I have a suspicion a fair bit of work could be done to improve the prop in many respects, I am keen to see how 'Ding' goes with Michaels prop on his Aeropower 2100 to see if it makes a huge difference. Long term I intend to sell this gyro so someone a little lighter than me can enjoy flying it, with a view to building a tractor gyro, so I'll hold off on the gearbox, etc until I make a firm decision. Thanks for your input.Regards,Nick.

Hey Murray, I have yours and Brians lovely machine as my wallpaper at the moment, so that I can try and steal some iudeas!!!! I thought that I could see a line from the "bullet" tank to the exhaust. I thought that it may have been a smoke generator. I need one of those "smoke generators", for the Avalon airshow next year. I learnt quite a bit about it from ??? at the Nationals. I think that ??? was Max Tate.Aussie Paul.[]www.firebirdgyros.com

No, the line from the tank underneath is a transfer line up into the main tank. The line into the exhaust is the 02 sensor. The production models won't have the aux tank. No,the gearbox on the red and white single seater is not the wrong way around,Rotax make them to go either way.Remember Paul, that engine may only weigh as much as a third of the total weight ahead of it.The thrust line on this gyro is still about 8 inches high with a 68 inch prop, but it flys pretty well.M Barker

Murray, just joking, this is back to "an engineering reason for the correct way to mount the gearbox." No one has really had a go at this question.Aussie Paul.www.firebirdgyros.com

Murray, as a matter of interest, which method do you use to calculate the COM?Aussie Paul.www.firebirdgyros.com

I have used the formula that ASRA put out some time ago but from discusions with Tim this seems to be flawed.Like I have said the simplest way of knowing for me is holding the stick still and give it a handfull of power,if the nose goes up you are on the right track.Remember, the reason all this CLT stuff started years ago is to try and stop power pushover's.I have read somewhere that useing that formula your "Hybrid" mesured 23cms above COM at the flyin at Kevin Treager's,is that right?.M Barker

No Murray, that is definately not right. I did not have Hybrid at Kevins. I had G-200 a Raf 2000 with a stab with vertical fins at the end of each stab.Aussie Paul.www.firebirdgyros.com

Murray, who made John Hills gyro? Is it a Rod Torr design? Its a great looking machine. EchoPS: You once posted some pics of the motor/redrive that went into the new tandem but I cant seem to find them.Any chance of posting them again? Cheers Eric
