quote:Originally posted by NiqueNaqueIf anyone was contemplating it .... don't use a grinder disc!In *non-ferrous* cutting a grinder blade will 'fill' with the cut metal, this in turn will melt and bind the wheel up, ever seen a 2.5 kW grinder bind up on a job? Very messy, both for grinder and operator.Cheers,Nick.RDC

What a load of garbage, don't use a grinding disc. For your info only there are several grinding discs avail that are specifically made for this and other type materials. They work a treat. Go see a tradesperson ,get the facts, before you shoot from the hip again.Safe cutting.RDC

Russell,I am a trades person and have seen the consequence of cutting copper with a grinding disc, a friend of mine spending a week in hospital after his 9" grinder attacked him and bit into his shoulder, 1/16" from his nerves which could have meant loss of use of that arm. Guess what, he is a tradesperson.I avoided any such problem as I was advised by a boilermaker with 40 years of experience in the business... his advice was not to use a grinder for cutting non ferous metals, I took heed and passed it on for the benefit of everyone.I'm clearly not shooting from the hip, nor assuming anything.Cheers,Nick.

Nick & Russell,What a load of garbage, don't use a grinding disc. For your info only there are several grinding discs avail that are specifically made for this and other type materials. I hope that there is a heap of typos in both of your comments, if you are using GRINDING discs to cut you are asking for a sh*t load of trouble, because the cutting ones are very thin and if something happens to make the blade grab it wil shatter a hell of a lot quicker and easier than the thicker grinding disc, how ever as Russell said there are discs specifically desgined for cutting just about anything even tungsten steels, but make sure that it is a CUTTING disc not a grinding disc, and the allum cutting ones work just fine because they were made for the job.....Am i going to regret this... probablyMark

Forgot to add, there is another cutting disc specific made to cut ally, it is impregnated cotton,or similar, real floppy and thin as, when your anglegrinder fires up, it cuts like a hot knife through butter. Avail BLACKWOODS AUSTRALIA. safe cutting.....A1014 []RDC

Greg,For cutting aluminum the correct cutting wheel is a steel wheel with shock cuts fitted, the teeth are tungstan steel, there is a cutting tooth followed by a clearing tooth etc, etc, and both teeth are positively raked, the size of the wheel will also govern the speed, and note, these wheels are very expensive, my wheel will cut 65X65mm bar, all the best Pete BarsdenPete Barsden

Thanks to all. Cheers Pete. I'll get details off of my cutting wheel and maybe a pic for comment. I'm pretty sure it's the right type actually designated as Aluminium cutting wheel and very expensive.Mitch.www.thebutterfly.info
