  • Fuel Pumps

The fuel pump on my gyro (subaru) has never let me down. I recently bought an identical one for a Suzuki 4wd paddock basher I have and it dropped its bundle an hour after I put it on. Thought I would bring forward my plan of fitting 2 pumps to the gyro.I had thought of putting them in parralell. 2nd pump with it,s own toggle switch and wiring circuit. I also thought of incorporating a second ignition wiring circuit to the coil off this #2 toggle switch. A "Claytons" dual ign. Backup to what I see as the weak link , being the toggle switch or a connection failure. What I am not sure of is whether the 2 pumps in parralell are too much pressure on the standard needle / seat and float (weber). Or if one fails will the other one pump back through the failed one rather than to the carb (one way valves??) or any other technical problems like that. Also whether there is any technical problems with having 2 wiring circuits to the coil.Seems all straight forward to my thinking but I have had straight forward electrical ideas before that have resulted in clouds of white smoke. [:I]Appreciate any advice.Mark.

G'Day Mark,http://www.rotaryforum.com/forum/sho...el+pump+series Check out this thread on the rotary forum, there is some good stuff regarding parrallel and series run pumps. Regards,Mitch.www.thebutterfly.info

I know of a number of guys running 2 clacker style pumps, wired together, 1 switch.....no probs at all. Another thing some are doing is modifying their soobs ( EA81) to dual ignition distributors and coils etc. A Melbourne Co does it all, you send them your old dizy they do there thing to it, and send it back with other components needed to fit to your gyro. You can have either points or electronic elecs, you state which. These are getting some big hours now, never missed a beat.Safe flying....A1014RDC

Mark , I have been running 2 facet fuel pumps(4-6 pounds) with seperate switches parallel, into a 'Y' connector that runs into a weber carb on a suby for just over 80 hrs.To this point I haven't had any problems runs well. I'm interested in the dual ignition running points also if someone will tell us what the demons are in doing this. Russell , do you know what the name of the company in melbourne is ?Dave Ellis

Thanks Dave,I have enough faith in the standard points / distributor ignition system if looked after. I,d reckon a second wiring circuit would be a good backup though. I know points and coils can fail too but for me its about minimising risk.CheersMark.

You end up with a dual system supplying your existing spark plugs.Never heard of any problems ever.Russell...RDC

Mark, I like your idea of having the second fuel pump operational in conjunction with redundant ignition coil wiring. The only problem that I could forsee would be if the origonal fault was caused by shorted wiring, - in which case it would also short the new circuit. Still, you are no worse of than before. If the problem was caused by "open" circuit then it would work well. I would suggest you have nothing to loose, and possibly more to gain.Tim McClure

Thanks Tim, always appreciate your advice. I see what your getting at re the short in one circuit killing both. Apart from maybe fuses in the circuits [?][?] I will go with the presumption that a short should be easier to avoid than an "open" cicuit type of failure.I dont like to complicate the "KISS" method but I figure 2 simple methods doesnt = a complicated one.Birdy....912[] yep, cant argue that.

Dual ign follow up.......Forgot to mention that the dual coil mods are avail from Rocket Industries,NSW, ph 02 88251900. It's called an automatic coil selector, made by MSD Igns, p/n 8210. This allows you to run 2 coils in your system, along with dual pickups etc in the distributor, that you get from the other company......RRDC
