  • Bensen overhead stick

I am a trike pilot...but don"t hold that against me

Hi Damo,Probably the first question would be are you going to keep your trike? If so probably a stick directly to the head isn’t such a bad idea. (someone more wiser than me might be able to explain if it would be too tiring or not with a direct stick)

Hey Damo,Rob Petroney is the man you need to speak to. He actually owns a Gyke (cross between a gyro and a trike) and can actually instruct in them. Baz

Rob Patrony at Bundaburg trains in a converted trike called a gyke. He is listed in the instructors section of ASRA home page area.Cheers Des Garvin

Thanks for the replies.I haven"t seen a Gyke...couldn"t find any photos in Google...anyone point me to a pic?I am planning on keeping the trike so would like to keep the controls similar. If I could convert my other trike to a Gyke would be even better.Anyone done this?

Only down side i can think of with my transition from trike to gyro was, i shoulda dun it years ago. Becoz they are so different, i dout youll have any problems knowing which one your in if things turn to ****, and your corrective inputs will be for the one your in.The central stick is much more natural.

Damo65, I have a suggestion or two should you go with the gyke option with regards to access to two emergency items.

Thanks again for the good advice.Does anyone apart from Rob Patroney build Gykes? or at-least a Rotor head with overhead controls? There are lots of old trikes rotting away in hangars and sheds around the country.Perhaps someone should build a Gyke conversion kit.I guess the overhead control will have a lot more vibration than a conventional stick.

An A frame control system connected to a rotor head will require greater movement, and intern transmit less vibration.A couple of the problems you will encounter with a Trike to Gyke convertion are.1) High thrustlines.2) A trike usually hangs at 9-10 degrees nose up. Were a Gyke hangs at 9-10 degrees nose down. This would mean moving the mast and rotor head at least 2 feet reward (or as required)3) The addition of a tail and horizontal stabilizer.4) Connection of controls to both Rudder and front wheel. Also a Rotax 582 in a trike will fly well 2 up. A Rotax 582 in a gyke wont carry 2 people. If it does then it will be very margonal.Regards SamL..........

An overhead stick will allow you to taxi comfortably on roughishstrips that will hammer the hell out of a regular setup. They look crap, but they work fine.

Hey Sam,The only trike parts I am aware of on Jeff H-S Gyroz is the front wheel, seats, and pod. The rest is pretty custom. I wouldn"t call it a conversion (you would be throwing away most of the trike!
