An electric prerotator is very cost effective (in the hundreds, or cheaper if you do it yourself) while a prerotator as on the Magni would be in the thousands.Tim McClure

            HIok it could cost more than a stater from a junk yard, but some guys seem happy to pay and yet still debate the question.what did you think of my idea on a shock/ lateraly translating motor(starter motor)from other forum.initial input is taken up in recoil of motor around the ring gear the rest is spin off.CheersAJPS have you heard of any one running currently a rotary engine?Gyro Gearloose

              I would prefer to soft mount the ring gear as on a motorbike sproket. This would give the "soft start" a 10 to 1 advantage.I have probably done my time with Rotary engines. Try John Evans for more current information.Don't be fooled however that the Rotary is a light engine just because of its physical size.Tim McClure

                dear Timsame horse different jocky. I like your thinking. reminds me of a clutch driven plate aswell I think you are on to something here.Did you know that lock wire is nichrome wire, it makes great power resistors. just twist together for a better rating. the superhigh temp stuff from dick smith / jacar,is much better for high temp ops once again twist together for higher rating.cheersGyro Gearloose

                    G,day.Looking at the Magni Drive pic's that Paul posted, it's obviously a good setup.My question: When the drive is disengaged there would have to bealot of slippage between pulleys and belts. Do the belts overheat oris there enough airflow to keep them cool ?On average hour many hours would be on the hobbs meter before theywould be replaced ?Ta.Robert.Robert DunnMackay. Qld.

                      Olbod, when the drive is disengaged there is 100% slippage between the belts and the pulleys. The belt naturally tries to assume a "round condition" and the keepers (clearly shown in the photos) are placed so as to releive the belt from the drive pulley. It may touch but there is no significient friction or wear. The life of the belt is indefinate if used as intended.Tim McClure

                          Olbob you may have to check with the dealer but I dont think Magni sell anything except to a Magni owner with a Magni serial number.Tim McClure

                            Sorry. I didnt make myself clear.I didnt mean the Magni product specificaly, but that type of system.I have seen pics of many different types, hand,electric, hydrolic etc.Which would be judged to be the best type,currently available, leaving out cost.No doubt they all work to some degree but if we were to construct a purpase built gyro, I'm wondering which way to go.By purpase built, I mean Fully enclosed (RAF,AAI,Firebird ), single centrally mounted seat.Not vertical takeoff but short rough strips.Approx 2 hundred kilo payload including fuel,flying up here in the north.Cheers.Robert DunnMackay.                               Oddbod,The Magni has a normal Wunderlich pre-rotator from the USA.It is the most effectivepre-rotator but not necessarily the best as it is fairly heavy and the heavy cable is supported by the head and must be flexed when the head moves.It would be more accurate to say that engine driven pre-rotators are the most effective.Fish.
