Deano,I ordered and paid ($355-00) for a LiFePO4 (LIFE) lithium ion battery which is 12 volt, 20ah and weighs about a third the weight of a lead acidbattery but the company had to return my money cause they couldn"t deliver it for some reason (recreationalflying.com.au).They are worth checking out. I have been using odyssey batteries. They were lasting about 3 years using the electric prerotator. I just bought a stinger battery to try it as they are a lot cheaper. It puts out the same power as the odyssey, so have to wait and see how long it lasts.Here"s a link to one on ebay. They should spin a 2.5

Hi DeanJust been through the same exercise and I would reccomend you have look at DEKA battery"s. They are designed and built for use in ATV"s and are a genuine rival to Odyssey but at a way better price.I ended up with a DEKA ETX30L - Absorbed glass mat tecchnology, 365CCA, 26amp hour, 168mmL x 131mmW x 176mmH, 10kg. I use it on a EA81 Turbo motor and also have an electric pre rotator. If anyone wants to see what a decent battery can do for a pre rotator, then put the jumper leads onto a 110 amp hour battery and see the little sucker spin the rotors up like never before~ I have used the Odyssey battery for many years and they are hard to beat but I would check out the DEKA, they sound good.There are a number of calcium batteries around now that are good performers.

Charge time, 45 seconds! A month later it still spins powerfully. First time I have seen such a device. But how good for a gyro. Capacitors are light, and just plug into power for a minute, and charged up. And they last a long time.Pity the new toy is not big enough to strap on the mast of a gyro.Graham

Thanks Brian. I"m wondering why the calcium battery produced the symptoms you describe if the previous battery appeared to be charging correctly. I"ll check the internal resistance of the calcium battery as compared to a lead acid one. Lower resistance will mean that they charge "harder" and also deliver "faster".
