Mark,Bob is correct. When the prop gets out of balance because one of the blades has departed, its a little worse than if you throw a balance weight off one of the front wheels on oyur car.I guess its because rotors are a fairly big gyroscope, that they still want to fly the way they did before the failure, making the airframe the part that is most affected by the unbalance. When the airframe moves up and down (really quickly) from the lumpy weight (unbalanced prop) and the rotors stay more or less on the same plane, The movement is translated back thru the stick. It felt like trying hold a trashing tiger shark using a chopstick for a rod. Anyway, Thats my take on the incident. Someone with more knowledge may have a better explaination but the terrifiying stick action was forward and backward, not side to side and Im still surprised at the freshness of my underwear when I walked home.Mark.By the way bob, it was thru a redrive. Nic, as I said the machine was housed in a carport so UV may have had some effect, however I suspect that it may have had a car door swung open onto it or worse, backed into. Judging by the way the longitudinal strands were broken and being closer to the root than other broken blades I have seen,it may have been the latter.Mark.

Balancing a Warp dive Prop?

My gyro sits in a carport and has done so all its life except for 6 months of the year when it sits out on a flat, the prop has done 4000 hours and survived a flip over in which one blade had a nasty bend in it but popped back into shape once the pressure was released. Have had it balanced once or twice and repaired the leading edge many times due to rocks getting flipped up and its due for a coat of paint a few years ago, been thinking of trying a Ivo but I'm not sure they are as tough as the Warp drive ! or as easily repaired !BrianPooncarie NSW

Ah,We had one bloke try an Ivo here, soft as, very flexible and stone prone to damage.. If you're happy with the warp, stick with it.Nicholas TomlinAlarmist - www.alarmist.com.au - we scare for you
