My gyro has a mast height of 2 metres to the top of the cheek plates from the ground. this appears very short to other gyros. My gyro is very sensitive or twitchy in roll. stick travel is 12in for pitch and 10in for roll measured at the top of the stick. Is the short mast causing this ? Gyro has rosco pod and control stick, air command head, 24ft ricks rotor and is clt. Any info would be appreciated guys. Bill[]

Bill,Gyros generally are twitchy machines. 2 metres does sound short but it isn't too different from how mine was when a direct drive. A compact machine is a good one as it will fit in the garage, mine won't, never mind that I don't have a garage. It is easier to stand on the ground and pad the rotors up as you don't have to climb up the seat to do it. The main criteria is that the rotors do not hit the ground, that is what I'd be worrying about given that I've just done it in my gyro, expensive moment that.I don't think it is the mast length that is the issue, the 10 inches on your joystick [you lucky boy] should give you +/- 10 degrees either side of neutral, which is not necessarily vertical, you could vary it by making the cross bar about 20% longer without modifying the pitch travel then their relative movements would seem the same - it seems twitchy in my reckoning because relative to the pitch, it is near 20% less travel. Enjoy it, but don't be ham fisted, gently bently.. only small inputs are required to effect gentle changes in conservative flight schemes, if the effort required to control the machine is not beyond what you can input then the 10" travel wouldn't worry me..Cheers,Nick.Nicholas TomlinAlarmist - www.alarmist.com.au - we scare for you

Thanks Nick I have already lengthened the crossbar to take the roll travel out to 12.5 inches. Haven't had a chance to test fly yet. I thought that some of our experianced members would have had some information for me on the mast height in relation to the handling of a gyro.Bill
