  • Diesel Gyro Engine Topic Urgently Required

Research is urgently needed within ASRA and the general gyro community to find a suitable diesel engine for gyros ASAP.

Scott,If there is enough interest I will start a "Diesel" heading under "Engines" and shift the posts there.I will however wait until such interest is shown.Good idea though, there"s got to be something out there already in common use.webbie

PSA produce more than 5000 1.4 l diesels a day. They are a dime a dozen in europe. PSA is Peugot and Citroens joint venture engine co. They power lots of different manufacturer models. They have 115hp at 2500rpm I think and double the torque of an ea81 at half the revs (1750rpm). I have everything to build one , just not the time at the moment. I have the 1.9l mechanical injection motor. The biggest problem is redrives as the pulses are huge. My test pilot mate assures me that all light aviation is headed in this direction because of the availability of avgas. Just think, you cant have an ignition problem if you have no ignition. The only drawback with the new diesels is the fact you need a computer for the common rail injection. There was a great article in Pacific Flyer years ago about the diesel Jodel. It used the engine I have. Performance figures exceeded a 180hp lycoming or continental. Search diesel Jodel. Ken

Well, we"re off to a good start. Biodiesel is a fuel that has no storage limitations like Avgas/Unleaded etc as it is basically vegetable oil. Did you know that all Sydney ferrys run on Biodiesel? This is not the reason they crash all the time though. If they have a fuel spill, the marine life can eat it instead of being killed by mineral diesel pollution. It is very difficult to ignite, even with a naked flame and it can be bought directly from the refinery in the Hunter Valley for a cheaper price than mineral diesel...... and it keeps our Canola farmers in business as well.Keep the info coming.Hoges

Yeh,Good one Scott. As Ken said, some-one on the continent had a jodel up and running a couple of years They were looking at production units then, but have not followed it recently. I think Hans Tiegler is the jodel spokesman at present. He would be a good source of info, even though he personally runs a 2.5 subie. A criitter from NZ has a diesel engine forum running for a couple of years as well. Ken, with those sort of torque/power figures, would you need a redrive?Cheers

It would be good if we could get some data on different diesel engines. Some useful info would probably be;1/ Weight2/ Horsepower and Torque curves3/ Dimensionsetc etcMaybe there"s a website with all this info somewhere?I"ll have a look on the web and see if there are any online engine manuals maybe?Fred, any idea on stats on the Jodel?Hoges

Nick,I contacted these dudes 4 or 5 years ago. They didn"t have it in production then, but indicated it would sell for $US20K or more. About equivalent to a new Lyco at the time. Kinda took the passion out of me.Cheers

Older figures fro 4 or 5 yrs back about the Delvion Jodel.1st engine was a 1700cc PSA(90hp) out of a pug 405. It had the best power to weight ratio of European engines in the 3-3500rpm and was manufactured at the rate of 3500 units per day.Engine is 35kg heavier than the equivalent Lycoming. But you dont need much of a wiring loom.Max torque is 26.6m/kg. prop was 2 blade airplast 1.63m. They set a service life limit of 10854hrs.they tested 10 engines on a bench under varying load conditions until they broke. The 1st failed at 12060hrs( broken valve stem) and the last at 16000hrs (1700cc turbo). At 70hrs they replaced the engine with a 2100cc which has 110hp.This had better performance than the 160hp DR 400 Lycoming.Shorter takeoff and better climb rate.they reckon it cruises at 220kmh uses 8lph at 2650rpm.PSA engines 1700cc turbo-BX and 405 -90hp
