For those that are interested Lucus I think it is have a synthetic oil stabilizer. They were set up on a display stand at the Mingenew Fild day last year and I believe the people maning it were from Queensland. Worth investergating by one of ye banana bender mates. I have found the Moreys / True Blue / Lucus oil stabilizers to do what they are quoted to do. I have only found that those whom state that they do damage have never used them or have some other smokeoil they are pushing. Never tried the synthetic stuff myself so cant comment on it. Find that dealer for Lucus in Qld and chech it out.Cheers and have a great and safe Xmas Des Garvin Ok just googled this for your information and here is the web address http://www.lucasoil.com/articlelist1...cOilStabilizer Check it for your self.I have no financial interest involved with this company. waddles, i wasn"t meaning to dose up any synthetic oil either. back with my rotax rob p had said 50/50 of 85/140 gear oil and moreys oil stabilizer i used that and never had a problem . ok others had their "brew " and had success too. in my autoflight too, because others were having heating complaints , i just decided to go with the same mixture of mineral based gear oil and moreys oil stabilizer. yes i know i don"t push the horse power as yours but i haven"t got any heat problems either. have i lost my warranty? probably!!! but [in my opinion] heil h is selling an expensive gearbox with a short oil change life cycle so he doesn"t have warranty problems to suit his gear box.

Thanks Guys,Engine temp is usually 80*, except recently. Agreed Tony that the radiator could be larger but it works fine at times other than those mentioned. I did a routine service on Saturday, changing both engine and gearbox oil but haven"t wrung the beast out yet. I"ll see what happens with the new untreated oils for comparative purposes.I"ve heards that Ken Norris had overheating gearbox problems with his autoflight and remedied that with some you beaut high performance oil using in motor racing I think it was. I"ve emailed him for more info on his original problem and remedy. From the thread, it would appear that many have had success in curing similar problems with many different brands and types of oils and supplements. This could end up being trial and error.I"ll try to call ProMa again today and see what sort of a line they spin.Meanwhile, I trust you and yours will have a Happy and above all, safe Festive Season.Waddles.

Paul, in 1968 many of our members would have been a sparkle in Dad"s eyes. The Pro-mar products, especially the grease work really well in load bearing situations. There is a short video on U tube or their site showing the load test they do , worth haveing a look at.The additive that is added to gear oil, MBL8 helps reduce noise and heat, you have to use mineral oil with it. Most people will try a product and swear by it, so any additive that you add or use is a suck it and see for yourself.

so a musterer has to change oil like twice a week ???????????. that just doesn"t seem right.Especially when you consider the Syntrax oils are warranted for extended drain intervals of hundred of thousands of k"s in truck transmissions by several makers!!! That is thousands of hours!!Miles

when the first auto flight box arrived here the gear mesh
at idle it was as noisey as all hell until it had increased engine speed and also load.it did go quieter then. i was offered to be able to buy that box because the next one with the correct design was coming. i didn"t buy it because it wasn"t the correct ratio, but i wouldn"t of bought it because of the incorrect gear mesh design.it won"t really worry me as the 25 hour change is 6months, but there is one hell of a difference on the best oil you can get for a purpose designed and built gearbox to keep under warranty for just 25 hours.???????? i"m also sure that to sell anything like this in australia, that legally a bit more paperwork than "the receipt" has to be supplied by a manufacturer, either imported or australian made.

Waddles did you do the modification to the bearing that was documented a while back for the autoflights G"boxes and I know on the kruzas there was an oil cooler system added as well speak to Neil in NZ about it, as the g"box was redesigned as well.Is yours downwards facing ? or up?

I haven"t modded the gearbox in any way. With hindsight, the problem seemed to appear with the use of the lastest Syntrax ATF which is now full synthetic and not semi synthetic. After reading all these posts and corresponding with some who appear to know about oil specs, I am of the opinion that all oil additives/supplements regardless of brand seem to do what is intended. It would also appear that the Syntrax ATF recommended is not specced for this type of application. Therefore, I"m going to try a 40W50 high quality gear oil with a supplement added. Hoping to have this done this week for a busy weekend. I"ll advise the results.Haven"t spoken with Neil for some time, but discussed Sam"s problems with him and he just asked me to fit a temp system to the box and report back which I did. Heard no more. I check for metal in the old oil at changes, as well as Kevin T"s advice to check bearing play via the "inspection" plate. My final drive is below the crankshaft line, not above.Regards,Waddles

Hi AllI have to admit everytime this type of topic comes up I end up sitting back with a mixture of interest, amusement and at times frustration. Can someone please let me know what oil is reccomended by the manufacture for use in the Autoflight boxes, there seems to be some confusion and after Waddles last post I am definitely am. Im interested in the comments being made when comparing semi synthetics and full synthetics and why people think that there is a problem interchanging these particular fluids. So far in this topic there seems to be a number of different oils being discussed for use and they are all very very different, I will assume from the descriptions that are given that all the products are Castrol branded, here are the specs for some of the fluids been mentioned, you will notice that there is a great variance in there physical properties.

Quote " n regard to oils, the old saying you get what you pay for generally applies, I am amazed by the amount of people who buy cheaper oils but then are more than happy to fork out a heap of extra dollars on some you beaut oil additve that one of the aftermarket companies is trying to flog off. Adrian mentioned in an earlier post that he uses Redline oils, and he also mentions that they are also very expensive, which they are, but thay are a top quality product and you get what you pay for. For all the guys who are spending dollars on aftermarket additives, how many of you have actually had the product tested and know what you are getting for your money? If you were to to have them tested you may infact be amazed and maybe even embarassed to see what you are paying for.CheersDarrenAll the so called " science" I have read on Slick 50 says it doesnt work which conflicts with actual results, while not scientifically verified, does at least have a 3rd party confirmation.BTW, fllying around yesterday from daylight to 1.00 pm when shade temp was 46 C my 2.2 was running the same temp as it always does even though I was working pretty hard for the last 2 hours and I would love to have seen the temp of the rotax gearbox although using the touch test, it seemed pretty much as hot as any other day.

Hi AllChopper - All I was trying to say is there are a lot of things to consider when selecting an oil, and gave an example of how increases in temperature have a negative effect on oil useful life. I stand by my statement of you usually get what you pay for, and we would all be surprised if we actually new what we were paying for when buying aftermarket oil additives. I"m certainly not saying there aren"t some good additives on the market today, but if you buy good quality oil, these additives and others are already present in varying forms. My opinions are based on 20 plus years in the mechanical field and another 5 years as a diagnostic technician for one of the countries largest independent oil testing laboratories and the past year as a technical advisor for an oil manufacturer, I"ve seen litteraly hundreds of thousands of working oil samples and seen the results in the real world. I have also seen lots of people ripped of by aftermarket additive distributors making all sorts of promises.Like I said these are just my opinions, nothing more and nothing less.Safe flying to all.Darren
