A solar superstorm (Coronal mass injection) alone could destroy all our planets sensitive communications. One such storm narrowly missed earth in 2012. If it happened a week earlier we would still be picking up the pieces. Anything that plugged into a wall socket would have been fried. GPS, smart phones, computers, radio and TV broadcasts, satellites, power stations All u/s. Meanwhile the cunning old farts would of dragged out their HF transceivers and had good long range comms.

Years ago I knew a fella at philips and he collected old ww2 or any ex military transceivers and most of it worked was always listening to police freq whatever floats ya boat i guess. This ex military equipment is bullet proof and with a bit of know how you can change the frequency x"tals i remember it looked like quality equipment.Mike.

Back in the 27Mhz CB days the congestion was so annoying trying to use them on the farm. I would change a crystal and have channels 1 and a half, 2 and a half , 3 and a half and 4 and a half. Much quieter.I am an Ham operator but not for over 30 years, so I am looking forward to having some HF while Grey Nomading around the countryside.Aussie Paul.

When I was a kid I"d listen to AM short wave often. The dial was full in the evening of english languages among others. Even car radio"s on AM would have a "dial full" when the sun went down. Most of the modern portables and auto radio"s now seem to be useless. No pulling power. Massed produced junk. No antenna terminal on portables. You enter my steel house and they stop working. Maybe that"s good, less EMR sapping through our bodies ;D See you in the top end next year Paul.

I"ve got some mates in town who love radio. I got my ham licence and can work other countries day or night. They get so excited if they work dx on their 27mhz radios but I listened once with them there must have been 30 people all calling at one time on the same frequency. I laughed. The all work illegal power just to try and get over top of everyone else which in turn makes it hard for themselves.

In the 80"s when cb was the go, I had a you beaut eurovox from memorty, had been changed from 18 channel to 40 and everything cool like that
