  • Breather on Rotax PRSU

Many thanks to all who made the trip to Lameroo and provided me with many future construction ideas.I travelled in the C172 parked at the end of the line so forgive my sins for not having G2244 present. My question here is that I noticed some Subaru powered aircraft with breather tube extensions on their rotax PRSUs and I think one was even connected to the PCV system. Is this because these gearboxes are prone to spitting out gear oil as I have not noticed this on mine despite relatively low hours in service.Or is it perhaps that these particular gearboxes are overfilled creating this anomaly and if so, has it been a problem noted elswhere that they need extra oil to counteract adverse wear or other difficulties?Just an observation that I am sure will have a logical explanation.Mike

No experts available or is this something that is too obvious to comment on ?

Guys,In my experience there is no requirement for tubes unless you over fill or use a heavier grade of oil.Adrian

Ta,Given I saw at least 3 machines at the Nationals with breathers, you either do not agree with Adrian or have done what he suggested in either overfilling or using a heavier grade. Why is this so? Does the PRSU work better, last longer, require less maintenance, run quieter etc?Is there a rationale for your mods that has not been explained here? Please explain.(I think that"s a Qld colloqialism)Mike

Des,Just a point of clafication on my post there is a requirement for a breather ala Rotax but the addition of additional tubes etc for a rotax box is unnecessary. This comment is for Rotax C & E box"s only.
