  • My First Engine Failure

Guys,I"ve had my first engine failure with my 582 powered machine.

Hey Dean,Unusual to have ice on full power. Normal icing is on lower power, or trailing throttle (descending). Might pay to treat the "Hungarian Hand Grenade" with some degree of suspicion for a little while.

Is it enough to heat the metal parts with rings i saw somewhere which fit the carbs and pump hot coolent through them?

Disco,I think it was the Yamaha snowmolile motor that has the carb heated with water.

Check for restriction in the fuel supply. This will cause the engine to cut at full throttle - filters ect. Enough ice to kill the engine at full throttle would also cause ice on the outside of the carby which you would notice either as ice or water dripping off the carb when you land.

The phantom thing that i was thinking about was a rotary valve problem of some sorts...

I would love there to be a simple answer or alternative, but there ain"t. What Peter said is most likely in your case. How were your EGT"s?Fred

I would agree with both Fred and Peter. Ice is vary rare in Rotax Two-strokes.The rotary valve cannot slip or jump a few teeth. If it could wear enough to do this then it would not jump back into place. You can easily check it for peace of mind by taking off the front carby and the valve should be just starting to close at TDC.

The pulse from a 2 stroke shouldn"t allow icing . It would be almost unbelievable. I"d be checking the pulse pump. Do you have a backup electric pump.Pull the heads off and check you havn"t had a cold or lean seizure. Other thing is maybe you picked up a bit of crap in the main jet and the engine felt rough as it was on one cylinder. Give me a ring, Ken.

Ill second wot Ken says bout the pulse pump.I had a 462 go just like yours did.Managed to get it down 3 times in 60 hours but couldnt find anythn rong.First time i suspected ice [ and yes, an underloaded 2banger will ice], but the other times it was dry asa chip.Nun of the "sperts" could answer it.Then i thought bout the pump, and fitted a leclec one.300 hours later and not so much asa splutter.BTW, clean carbs n bowls only mean your filter is do"n its job. And a filter thats do"n wot its sposed to do will block up, eventualy.

Im not sayn its the pump, but id bet good coin on it.And a heater isnt dead weight either, coz in the rong conditions, it will.
