  • In Flight Data Capture

A couple of weeks ago I was flying with a mate who bought his "I Phone" along for the flight. It was loaded with full flight instruments which impressed me no end. He then decided to try his data capture features he had loaded. These were a G meter (acceleration meter) Total G"s over time meter, Max speed reached meter, Speed over time meter, and climb rate over time meter. It amazing just what these gadgets can do, and how accurate they really are.Note the G meter recorded the total G loading in the tightest turns I could make 2 up in the KRUZA.This just proves how hard it is to pull over 2 G"s in a Gyro.Regards SamL................... 8)

Interesting stuff from an investigative point of view.We know about and have used data from Garmin GPS units to assist with conclusions in accident investigations in the past. This seems even better and certainly complimentary.Whilst the thought is foul, perhaps we should all use whatever data capture devices we have, ensure they are turned on for every flight and hope that the recoverable data will not need to be presented at a coronial enquiry!!!!Can the Iphone data be downloaded to an exernal device and how robust are they?Waddles.

Hmm, good idea - similar thing on Android phones called Tricorder.Could store to an external card but haven"t worked it out yet.I phones can export and are reasonably robust and if there is any data worth recovering it might be do-able on a broken phone, it depends on how broken it is.Cheers,Nic.
