  • airstrip availability

I"ve been using an aboriginal airstrip on the cox peninsular near darwin for the last 2.5 yrs. with an agreement to pay them $10 per hr. when flight training. It has been working ok and I have placed a high cube container on site which houses two gyros with blades on. The strip is 2.3 km long and can be seen from 100 km in space. It is ideal for flight training, and the only time I,ve seen it used is to cart off a black fellow to hospital in a $3000,000 helicopter. The cartaker told me "It"s good to see the strip used" Today I recieved a letter from the aboriginal council wanting $100 per month and $17 per landing. That means, as I am a pensioner, operating a sporting gyro at $140 plus $10 for the strip, If I am training at one landing every 4 mins. I would have to add another $255 to my hourly rate. Total = $395 per hr. Plus land rental, and I"d still be operating at a non-profit. The airstrip was built with the hard earned tax money from your pockets. Makes you want to go and live with Dave Bird and get away from the bull crap!

Now that is cheeky, sounds like a grab for cash.If you were a commerical operation it would not really be a surprise.Their not a city airport and thats what has happenned in the cities a big grab for cash. It will destroy the strips as result and make it too dear to land their for most rec flying.Find a friendly Farm/station and ask for permission to use it instead. There is an insurance for strip operators you might need to think about, which is around 1K per year, covers the strip owner for any claims.Only a thought might be an option.Pity how greedy some people get to be and then destroy the cost offset they were getting, Typical.

I"d Love you to be P.M. birdy. The hard workers would be rewarded. I had been using tennant creek airport for about 10 yrs. and wasn"t charged a cent. I would buy a piece of **** land somewhere just good enough for an airstrip, but the politics here in the N.T. are a bit weird when it comes to land. The polie"s have got no guts when dealing with black fellows. The average half pissed black fellow treats me like a hero because of the gyro. The bullshit happens above them.

If ASRA would have all the money that has been spend on now abandoned aboriginal communities only from the Kimberley region alone. There would be enough money to build a private airstrip for EACH member of ASRA Ind have a hanger with sliding door toilet andlights plus a BBQ at the back, thrown in for good measures.I personally could show you 8 communities with in 1.5 hours flying a round kununurra alone. And some are less than 5 years old with no one on the ground.I would like to find out,

Um here some other Airport fees. (This is not legal advice)Some information that maybe of helpThis might assist in maintaining a status quo as they must be able to justify the charges particularly compared to the strips and airports that I listed below. These took me 5 minutes to find and these are much bigger airports and they do actually provide services that do cost. The key question is what are they providing you with for the increase in charges?

That is happening all over aust. Thomas, billions of wasted dollars, and a poor old pensioner running a non profit sport can"t even use a dirt airstrip. Instead I"ll be risking my **** on roads and bush tracks.

I went to our local medical centre once to get a tropic rash checked out. The nurse told me to go to the community medical centre 15km away the next day as there would be a doctor there. When I arrived I was told that the doctor could not see me because I was a white man. (not in those exact words) If I was a black australian with a gyro copter I bet there would be no airstrip charges. If thats not racial discrimination, I"ll give up alcohol!

Thanks for the info. Bill but my computor won"t pick it up. I know they are a wonderfull invention, but I"m sick of always having to update it to stay in touch. I poor all my energy into building a good gyro and making it fly well. I think they are a marvelous vehicle and I never get bored flying a gyro. When skydiving I once fell asleep in the aircraft and had to be woken to leap out the door. A gyro is always a challange. Like playing a piano, you never stop developing new skills.
