Ok so sometime between now and starting solo training (probably around Easter) I will have to find and purchase my own gyro. Does anyone have any advice regarding companies that offer insurance for our sport?cheersLefty

Thanks guys,I did find Adrians comments here http://www.asra.org.au/smf/index.php?topic=4154.0So what"s with not getting full hull insurance? $30 - $90 000 for a machine and not getting it insured seems rediculous to me.... what am I missing?

Hi AllLefty as the guys here have already said gyro hull insurance is virtually if not impossible to obtain here in Australia. I have only recently returned from living in South Africa where gyro hull insurance is readily available, but at a cost of course. To give you and idea of the typical cost for hull insurance there it worked out basically as the following.Annual insurance premium was approximately 10% of the sum insured, so if your gyro is insured for $50,000 then your annual premium was $5000 dollars, most guys in South Africa are flying MT, ELA, Xenon and Magni machines powered by the Rotax 914 so the annual premium is closer to the $6000 - $9000 figure. Most of the guys I flew with figured that if they had an accident it was most likely to be on the ground, so it would probably cost them a new prop, set of rotors and possibly a new frame if all went pear shaped, so with that in mind they were willing to take the risk and not worry about insurance and just wear the cost or repairs if it were to eventuate. I guess there is no greater insurance then proper training, we have some great instructors here in Australia, take your time and dont be in a rush and always fly within your capabilities, I"ve always figure the smartest decision I"ve ever made as a pilot were on the the ground.RegardsDarren

Just thought i would put my two bobs worth in. I recently bought a new MTO sport and organised hangar / ground insurance with Elders at Tamworth through a bloke called Will Mitchell. The insurance is with QBE and Will told me that they were willing to look at flight insurance for very experienced pilots. I am only a beginner so i am not eligible but for those that want insurance it may be available. I also agree that the best insurance is a well maintained machine, good training and flying within your capabilites.

My Insurance is: Make the passenger read the ASRA Waiver, make them sign my personal waiver plus a witness if possible. (One I converted from the horse people and had checked by a lawyer during a drinking session) Don"t fly over any area where if any part of your gyro became detached it would damage person or property on the ground. And if the craft got damaged on the ground - fix it. And have lots of spares on hand. (brings you good luck)

Ok.......so you wana fly in me gyro aye......no probs, must point out tho, we may not get back unscathed, me piloting skills are ordinary, me machine is twitched together by fencing wire, i"m short on $$, so we have bugger all fuel in me tanks, i"m diabetic, dyslectic, vision impaired, and if we do get into strife, my lawyer will sue the **** off your family estate for forcing me to take you for a blat.So.............how do we stand now
If you aim for nothing, you'll hit it every time
