  • Cold Oil

Been doing a bit of researching on rotaxs and why they are so slow to warm the oil up to 50C etc. Even after fitting a thermostat nothing changes in regard to the time it takes in getting the engine to 50C, the thermostat only comes into play after that which is a big help cause you dont have to have the oil cooler taped up in cold weather. The culprit is the engine, it pumps the oil around fairly slowly and the oil comes out of a large steel container sitting out in the breeze [ in a gyro] and it has to warm up 3 litres of oil so there you go !! :I have spent all week either on the loader clearing fence lines or on the grader and I got thinking about this oil warming problem & I got thinking why hasnt someone designed a cover for the oil tank that is like an electric blanket where you cold plug it into the power or into say a 12 volt battery, [ not the gyros battery] ?? and it would have a thermostat so that you could set it for say 20 or 30 C.Does anyone know if there is a electric blanket available or is there an opening o make squilions of

well you obviously havent got the thermostat hoked up properly cause they normally warm up very quickly with one attached, under a couple of mins to 50* from what i noticed, then keep it about 80-90* after take off

I seem to have the same problem as you chopper, It takes a good ten minutes to get the machine to 50 degrees and during winter I have to tape up around 25% of the oil cooler to maintain 90 degrees during flight. If anyone has any suggestions it would be appreciated. Most people I speak to with rotax motors have the same issue.

What sort of thermostat do you have or is there just one type? and how do you have yours hooked up.?I was basically looking around to see what options I had.

Brian, one option is that you could move up here to the tropics and your oil will never be cold, not even this time of year.We could then go fishing all the time and you would save a lot of money on gyro maintenance.I see this as a win- win for us both especially if I could come over for one of Rosie"s famous meat pies.Graeme.

Brian, look up engine pre-heaters from Aircraft Spruce in the US.They make a good range of stuff.Usually they are stick on heating pads that you just plug in for whatever time before you start the engine.Personally I would just put up with a cold engine than move to North QLD with the swamp people.

Just Lurking in the background here and Murray painted a mental picture with his swamp people comment!Sorry mate, but I just imagines you with a couple of teeth missing in the drivers seat of an air boat, pretty funny mental picture ;D (black out the middle tooth)Anyway, 550 meter east /west strip now almost finished at Bedervale, flat for 220, dogleg and downhill for the rest of the way. Powerline to the right (north) and a big gully at the end, plenty to keep ones mind on the job. Will be back in the air in a month!regards to all,Mark

it"s been awhile now but I can remember seeing on the ROTEC site they had an oil thermostat valve for bypassing oil TOO the oil cooler when needed ,I think. it"s claim to fame was that if the thermostat

Okay, bought a oil thermosat through Rosco, fitted it and its working beautifully although I have only had two flights since fitting. Time to 50C is now down close to 5 minutes which is excellent and in flight it goes to 90 C and doesnt shift so I"m thrilled to have the oil heat sorted !!Anyone thinking of fitting one needs enough hose to replace ALL the hoses cause hoses with 1,000 hours on them go a bit hard
