Well done Max!You"re eminently qualified to "wring out" a slick European tandem and do the steepish un-powered approaches that should always be done and land un-powered as a gyro always should!

Disco, you make a good point. But, you need to fly it like a gyro, not like a FW like this bloke did.http://multimedia.laprovincia.es/vid...7616.shtmlDonk surged, he shat and plonked it in on wot he was lookn at at the time.

Much rather go on a long flight even if it takes a little longer in a comfortable gyro than a fixed wing. A one and a half hr. cessna ride would often give me motion sickness for 3 days. "We should learn to not be in a hurry and enjoy the journey" (A good philosophy for life)

Yep - that piece of video is pathetic. And, the dumb dude lines up, farts around, eventually pre-rotates, then throttles up. All the while I had visions of an Embraer nosewheel or some other commuter or airline nosewheel whacking him to kingdom come from behind. In my opinion, rotors should be spun up before crossing the holding point of any licensed aerodrome, and the time spent stationary on the runway be kept to an absolute minimum. Every other conceivable flying machine wanting to use that runway will be between 2 to 4 times faster than a gyro, so there"s always a very real risk of being cleaned up from behind on the runway or during final or during initial climbout - despite making all the proper radio calls.Mark R

Yeah that was pretty ordinary, Poor Gyro, i probably would have instinctively turned 180 as he had just taken off. I don"t know what the winds were but i recon i"d had a better outcome than dropping into on a rock face that could have been really nasty he"s lucky he got away with a damaged Gyro. I hate cruelty to Gyros. There should be a law against it. Darwin law simply is not working.Mike.

He He He, Muz Yeah it was a rotax but you can Jam the factory tub in your flange, as well... I can"t be bothered going there you know what I"m talking about and I aint taking the bate because you have dangled it there too long and the prawn has fallen off the hook. A Gyro is a Gyro Rotax is very reliable, must have had something fundamentally wrong to stop like shitty fuel they just don"t stop running for no reason, and not bullet proof either.Mike.

Blake. I like a lot of the factory machines, as I have said before (The ones with rotor/prop/tail clearance anyway) my only point is that people with factory machines or ANY engine, including Rotaxes, should always have in their mind that the engine can stop.... in fact I only spoke to a guy the other day that had a complete catastrophic kaboom

That video about the gyro crash landing. I can"t tell whether the engine was missing soon after lift off or whether the noise was distorting the mic. There is no way that a sane pilot would continue to attempt to climb out with a missing engine, especially as there was plenty of runway left. If that was an engine problem, why didn"t he immediately lower the nose ~ 35*, as the primary response, then select a suitable place to land, while he still had reasonable options. And what"s the story with the take-off. He pre-rotated the balls out of it then gave it full noise (912/914) and it still took over a klm to take off?You can definitely hear an engine die and surge soon before it hit the ground, meaning that he still had some power, which would have given him far better options than the one he chose. A comedy of errors, and with a PASSENGER ON BOARD. Loss of license - and back to an instructor for some more dual time. Shows how important it is for instructors to demonstrate and teach correct forced landing procedures, and not always in ideal situations.Incidentally, doing a 180* turn with an engine failure on climb out is not a recommended procedure, and can only be successfully carried out under certain conditions, and in a gyro you don"t often have time to weigh up those conditions.

Yeh ok sometimes say flying a to b you get in this transfixed flight mode and a little fatigue even the woka woka has an effect called strobing and some times you need to slap yourself and say ok i"m landing now and focus on the job. It appears this pilot was overwhelmed with the situation which could happen to any pilot if they aren"t thinking about it properly. My instructor said it is good to practice engine outs occasionally to keep it fresh in your head. I have practiced occasionally and my asshole still puckers and that"s with the engine idling so full out is worse. But after a few of these you are the boss and can really master the situation. But i just hope i will react properly when it happens for real. And Muz when you fly over tiger country it"s a calculated and acceptable risk and yes avoid it when you can but not always possible. Some flight planing and constantly mapping the ground in your mind in flight helps.I guess if your going down over tiger country fill back stick into the trees or rocks your gunna wreck your machine but hopefully you will walk away or climb out of the tree, EPIRB SAR, etc. And for my fancy factory tub it"s all over as A. I"m still paying it off and B. I can"t afford to fix it a. It would take a couple of years of saving I don"t want any more debt.

As a victim of an engine out on takeoff over scrub country at 200 feet I can assure you that there is no time to think just look for a spot that you believe will be the least damaging and do your best. Oh yeah, having an instructor in the back seat also helps. It all ended well and I realised first hand that due to their amazing capabilities gyros really are the safest thing to fly. One thing that I have engraved in my memory though is that if you have an engine out on takeoff don"t turn back, you won"t make it!
