Friendly FireKevin Rudd was visiting a primary school andwent into one of the classes. They were in themiddle of a discussion related to words and theirmeanings. The teacher asked Kevin, the saviourof "working families", if he would like to lead thediscussion on the word "tragedy".So Kevin (the saviour of "working families")asked the class for an exampleof a "tragedy".A little boy stood up and said, "If my best friend, who lives on a farm, is playing in the paddockand a tractor runs over him and kills him, thatwould be a "tragedy" "."No", said Kevin, "that would actually be a manresultantaccident rather than a tragedy in termsof the words you"ve used".A little girl raises her hand,"If a school buscarrying fifty children drove off a cliff killingeveryone inside, that would be a tragedy"."I"m afraid not", explained Kevin, "that"s what wewould call a great loss, some would say acountless loss but as you"ve mentioned thenumber fifty, we can no longer say it iscountless, but it is nevertheless nothing morethan a great loss".The room went silent. No other childrenvolunteered. Kevin scanned the room. "Isn"tthere someone here who can give me anexample of a tragedy?"Finally, at the back of the room, young Jackraised his hand.In a quiet voice he said, "If a plane carrying youand Julia Gillard was struck by a "friendly fire"missile and blown to pieces, that would be atragedy"."Fantastic", exclaimed Kevin. "That"s right. Andcan you tell me why that would be tragedy?"."Well" says Jack, "it has to be a tragedy, because it certainly wouldn"t be a great loss andit probably wouldn"t be an accident either!".( from a fellow member here )
