Mark,Just change over to Linux and all any Windoze problems will be gone for good, you won't want to go back to the dark side.... ask Scott Hogan. But if you want to stupidly struggle on...If you are using windoze eXtra Pains - The best protection for you is to not browse the web as your computers administrator, go on as a user only. If your user allows you to install software, create another user without that ability, then use that user to browse the web. If you have Wince 95 or Wince ME or any of the other lowlife softwares from Microsh1te you have to have a good virus software package to try protect your machine, hahaha.. more dollars.Risks: Java script and java;Go into your browser settings menu and check through the Java and Java Script settings, disable the feature that allows software installation and / or upgrades, this will provide you with some protection.Risk: Cookies; To browse this site you need to have cookies enabled, but you can do these things selectively (on linux anyway) by telling your browser which forums to trust, ie, you give it a domain name for this site "www.asra.org.au" and set the cookie permissions to 'allow', then you set all other sites as 'deny'.General settings:In windoze you can modify your general settings to a high security mode and fiddle with the items you want to in the 'advanced' sections, but generally I disable 'global java' and 'global java scripts' and 'software upgrades'. The things that do the damage:In windoze if you load a file with a .com or .exe or .bat or .pif extension from an untrusted source you are asking for trouble as these files are executable. The ones that will catch you out are compressed self extracting archives, they have to be executed to self extract, so never download a self extracting archive, just get the compressed archive which will only have a '.zip' extension, not a '.exe' extension. If you need a verbal explanation please ring me on 0418811953.Hope this helps,Nick.

I agree with Nick that Linux is the way to go. Tell Bill to shove it. (Have you ever known one of their products to actually work as advertised?) I was recently talked into using their eXtra Problems programme, against my better judgement. It lasted three hours before I formatted the Hard drive. Couldn't get rid of it any other way. I don't know how they get around the Australian truth-in-advertising laws. I've got an excellent Linux set called 'MEPIS'. Comes with everything that opens and shuts, installs without any hassles, grabs anything useful from your existing operating system (like internet settings, mail settings, etc)and starts up every time. In addition, I use a CAD programme called Autosketch that will only run under Windoze so I downloaded 'WIN4LIN' (From, not surprisingly, www.win4lin.com/). Windoze happily runs under Linux thinking it has unique control but is actually running in a cleverly disguised 'box' of Linux's devising. I still get to use my one critically important programme but with all the protections of Linux.Score one for truly free enterprise!RJWS'Ever noticed how they all look just like an exotic orchid?' Hey dont get me wrong. I have three fedora systems at home myself. It horses for courses. Linux is not yet a fully developed system, but its getting close. Support for hardware is its biggest downfall. Ive only seen one flavour that will actually install the correct video and sound drivers on my laptop (Ubuntu). And there is still no real support for wireless. With most bundles you still need to spend time obtaining and installing the correct packages. This is often beyond most casual users who would be better served by something simple like a mac mini. What I was getting at is like most linux-advocates, you seem to summarially discount the value of other systems.

Hm, 1. A hypocrite; esp., a superstitious hypocrite. Obs. 1913 WebsterNo, doesn't fit... 2. A person who regards his own faith and views in matters of religion as unquestionably right (nope, not quite), and any belief or opinion opposed to or differing from them as unreasonable or wicked (nope, not quite). In an extended sense, a person who is intolerant of opinions which conflict with his own, as in politics or morals; one obstinately and blindly devoted to his own church, party, belief, or opinion (nope, not quite). 1913 Websteryeah, a bit grey.. but here's why I'm intolerant of Microsh1te:You pay good money for stuff that doesn't work reliably..My experience with windoze 9x5 and 9x8, most recently Xtra Pains:Crash,!@#$%^&* crash, !@#$%^&* crash,!@#$%^&* crash,!@#$%^&* crash,!@#$%^&* crash,!@#$%^&* crash,!@#$%^&* crash,!@#$%^&* crash,!@#$%^&* crash,!@#$%^&* crash,, all with varying intervals of work in between, some no greater than 30 seconds, even after reloading windoze time and again. My experience with Linux:work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, ??? WTF?? when is it going to crash??? (its a worry for M$ when people learn this fact) work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work,ad nauseum.I can wear myself out working productively instead of wearing myself out fixing a heap of crap, and it just keeps getting better all the time.I'm not bigotted Lloyd, I just don't like to waste my time on software that does not work as I want it to nor as intended. As a for instance that I have a Toshiba Laptop with MicroSh1te Xtra Pains on it, never had a crash on Linux, but twice at least before I gave up on it I'd left it idling on a job, it died, with lost time.Have read of this site: http://www.theregister.co.uk/As to politics: http://www.larouchepub.com is an interesting read.. you might find out how many faces a politician has, I can only guess like you, because I too am not a politician, I merely have political interests and aspirations.Cheers,Nick.
