  • Painting rotor tips

It is common to paint the tips of propellers to help see them while they are spinning, but not so for rotor blades. Just wondering why, is it the slower speed of rotors make it not as necessary?Daryl Patterson

Hi DarylThe only reason I'v been told you paint rotor tips different colours is to make tuning them easier Butch.

DarylPainting of the blade tips is normally done to help identify the tracking of each blade. Colours used are normally red and white.Problem is their are many different ways to check your tracking, so in my case I have painted one side of my rotor head black, as it is easier to see as it spins slow compared to the blade tips.I then painted my tips yellow to make the rotor disc more visible for both saftey, and looks.Word of warnning, painting the tips must be done very carfully as if more paint is applied to one tip, it can cause an inbalance, so once finished, check your C of G of each blade, then check them mounted on machine or dummy Jesus bolt in the shed with no wind. Your Welcome Sam, I really do like the Dragonfly.Progressing slowly, playing with the fibreglassing stuff at the moment, hope to have frame powder coated in the next few weeks. All going well, I should be back in the air early next year.Hey Daryl,I have seen some gyros with painted rotors, one set I have seen had one clear coated the other white this maintained the balance and looked great either from the ground or the air, when flying above.Mitch.www.thebutterflyllc.com
