Gents,The other day I was asked by a colleague to look at what the result of a 1000 kg car travelling at 50 km/hr would do to a building if it were to collide with a security bollard 2 metres from the building - he wanted to know what the force would be on the bollard so it could be passed on to the structural engineer so he could see if the building would be damaged by the impact.Ooooo, long time since I´ve touched on this subject - dragged out a text book on the matter. The car travelling at this speed has kinetic energy which has to be disapated in the building, footings and in the car itself - the manufacturer of the bollard said the car would be destroyed in the collision and most likely anyone in it would be seriously injured or killed. The energy it has is calculated by the formula:KE = 1/2 Mass [kg] x Velocity [m/s]²
