Anyone got a Vertex ProV radio that actually works on a gyro.Mine has been away to get fixed by an authorised repair shop. Changed out the socket the four segmented pin plug goes into. DONT WORK!Still only recieves when hooked up to various head sets. Wont transmit with PTT set ups.When used as a stand alone radio it recieves and transmits fine.I"m starting to wish I"d bought an Icom or similar 5 years ago......Help... ???Mitch

Greg, I"ve had a Vertex VPro for 3 years now. VXA 150. After 150 hours the headset lead failed. The tip came loose in the plug. I wired in a new plug but the new one didnt seem to plug in as much as the old one. I bought another plug from another manufacturer and it was the same. So I seem stuck with this situation. I now have to hold the plug in with a rubber band so that it makes contact at trhe tip. i reckon vibration has caused this. But having said that, I have been heard from 100kms away at 500" If you need a wieing diagram, sing out.Hatrack.

Hatrack,Good to hear from you, is there still a smidge of a chance of seeing you down here at Easter?Mate, Mine is a Pro 150 also.Your story is as mine.The jack pin plug socket has only one clasper. It is not like it"s larger cousins that often have two claspers. I used to have to use lacky bands to hold the cable also.A straight in plug is no good, too much stress on the socket.A ninety degree pin plug is better but unless the cable is restrained the socket can easily be damaged....Bloody ordinary design fault in my opinion.Fred, John Reynoldson sold me the radio and helmet. He is not an authorised repairer and referred me to the only two in the country. Wade Air is one, the other guy is in Adelaide. I sent my unit to Wadeair and although I got messed around with "time", a new socket was installed free of charge or return post. Thanks to Wade for that!My radio is still as described above.Mitch.

Ground tested radios with a mate the other day, all seemed OK.We took a coffee break then prepared to depart the home airfield.Plugged the jack pin into radio and nothing.Pulled the pin out and immeadiately noted that the fourth segment of the 4 segmented jack was missing.Looked inside the radio socket and there it was.So I have had the socket replaced once and now the expensive double GA plugs are U/S.I know of several blokes in the USA who have had sockets replaced and broken jacks also, on Vertex/Yaesua hand held radios.The side jack plug arrangement is lacking a mechanical fixing mechanism and the connection is flimsy at best.IMHO it is a great radio for ground opps but is problematic for open frame gyroplane use.I would like to hard wire the GA plugs into the unit or have some sort of bayonet or screw on fixing device which would be more robust connection.I will get the tip out of the radio and replace the GA plugs BUT this will be the last time I spend money on this unit.

Mitch,Vertex fixed this problem when they released the VXA 220 after feedback from OZ users. The headset plug now plugs in the top and has a screw in lock - the best value hand held in my view for a gyro at $395 from ozpilot.com.auAdrian

Adrian,Good to know that they fixed what essentially is a great little radio with a decent connection.Bet they dont give current ProV users any special discount for costs incurred previously trying to keep their units operational.I found an old GA double plug, one plug missing but the 90 degree jack and two leads are usable and have given my radio to a bloke down the street,. He"s a electronics ex RAAF fellow. So I should have this unit back in short time.,Meantime I guess I"ll have to save up for the VXA 220.Cheers,Mitch.
