Hi RobVG"s are used to extend the onset of a stall, or to help reduce the amount of drag on a surface by also reducing the onset of airflow separation (therefore reducing drag) ie; see golf ball pic.This happened by producing small vortices which are forced down along a surface by the aircraft"s boundary layer. The key to VG"s is to ensure they do not break into it. If the boundary layer is broken then the total drag co-efficient is increased. This is why most quality VG"s are tiny.
