Hi Tony, what engine are you using? I wonder if the electric pre rotator has a combined affect with a big battery pull down and then a huge alternator imput although I only switch on the radio and gps only after I"m finished pre rotating. Its just so frustrating when you cant get to the bottom of a problem. I went flying this morning and the new radio is very clear and it certainly is crisper coming in to my ears. Got to do some distance testing to see what happens.

Its very easy for a uhf to receive, seems you could nearly use your little finger for an aerial and it would suffice ...however, transmitting is another world again, everything must be aligned with the celestial whatever

So Chopper have you fixed it or not?You can still send me those piccies to waynfwlr@exemail.com.au if that is easier.I may be able to organise some better cable depending on what I see.Chook

Chopper I have just re read one of your other posts - are you still using those insertable earplugs? I suspect that the fine wire connection between those and the main lead is where you are having your problems? Send some piccies. If its the wire I suspect that they are using then it will be better to crimp that part of the connection because where the solder ends and the copper continues is a susceptible fracture point. There are other tricks which we can also employ. Send piccies and some close ups of the connections.Chook.

Talked to my mate and he reckoned I sounded very clear so we still have the new aerial to install and a new flex lead from the 4 pin plug to the helmet to re new and put on the ferrite resistoers.Yep, still using

Brian there are many types of microphone cable which cater for external interference, abrasion and flexibility, impedance (read matching the circuits either end) and multiple functions within the same cable (eg mic and headset + switching).

Thanks Chopper.Yep - looks like it needs a birthday. Ok, the bit I would check out first is the plug that fits into the front of your radio on the left hand side with the curly cord. Under that cover is a small plug that requires a special tool to crimp the wiring into the modular plug. It"s probably been ages since it was looked at or replaced and that is the first point at which both the microphone and the headset exit the radio and may be where you are getting the problem. You obviously know how to remove it because you have swapped the radio over. Look carefully at the gold pins - they should be clean with no corrosion (green). With the weight of the curly cord bouncing around it causes stresses in the copper in the cable. Without test gear I would just cut that plug off about 3" out and re terminate it.When looking at your 4 pin plug I can see corrosion around the outside edge and suspect that the male & female pins will also be suspect. That is a common plug & socket which I can source for you here in Perth if you need to. Similarly the the modular plugs I can get but you will require that tool to crimp it.I think I can count 3 connections in your earphone connections between the inserts and where it will enter the radio. There is probably another because the 2 earpieces combine into the "Y" and end up on a 3 pin plug. This would indicate to me that at that point they are still indepenadant (or in stereo mode). Do they go to some electronics "box" after that? Does the other end of that curley cord coming from your radio go to a "box" that needs power for it to run?Ok lotsa questions still, so I"ll stop here and let you digest this lot.Chook.

All bits I can source from Mildura plus I know of a bloke who can do and will have the crimper necessary plus does very good soldering work etc There is a tube that comes down from each earmould, joins at a Y connector, then plugs directly into the external speaker plug on back of UHF. That lead you see there is a brand new lead from one end to the earmoulds so I"m very confident its working well, yes, you get streo, you can plug it into a cd player etc, and its got great sound. It doesnt have any electronics box, everything is somehow self contained internally. The lead I replaced only had sound to one ear so thats why I replaced it.
