Gents,Whilst tracking down starter motors and solenoids for soft starts, I came across this web site.... www.fairford.co.uk/ I think there electronic Startmaster (3 phase) covers 2.2kw and upwards. It's a great read for anyone trying to get there head around the processes and relates strongly to current discussions.Mitch.www.thebutterfly.info

Getting back to the subject fellows.......would love to see a reliable pre rotator that could spin rotors up to around the 200 revs mark that were as simple and as reliable as the electric pre rotator. I know some of the US pre rotators can do this but they certainly are not a long life product as can be witnessed on the US forum where rotators are only lasting 30 hours or so.

To me it seems that the law of diminishing returns applies to prerotators. The main benefit is to get it over about 80 or so rrpm. it's then quite suprising how well it will accelarate with a bit of breeze or just a carefull taxi.I can understand the Musterer's desire to get his wheels off the lumpy stuff, but most of us have enough of a run for these higher rrpm to be unnescessary. Anyway for really high preroation speeds you need the complexity of some sort of collective.Yesterday Col and I did some more stuff on starter impact. These were subjective tests as they did not lend themselves to proper measurment. We found that even with a soft start the impact could be markedly reduced by separating the solenoid's functions of pinion engagement and current control. By not using the starter solenoid lead to the motor the pinion would engage, we then used a separate solenoid to control the current. It also has become apparent that the resistor in this type of soft start should be Nichrome, as its resistance only rises by a small amount as it heats up, compared with other materials. When we get hold of a permanent magnet starter we intend to do some impact tests.Be kind to your rotor!John Evans

as far as i can see, the more develepment the better. If it is just 1 group of flyers that will benefit from better prerotation, than it is worth it.Lets just not look at gyros as toys, but as functional tools, then they might be taken more seriously. angus
