  • Steeeeep Final

A while ago Birdy posted something on flying techniques and how to do a steeper than normal final approach ............I misunderstood Birdys approach ..................[].........Sorry I have deleted the rest for safety reasons as it may have presented a danger to pilots who attempted the technique I proposed...........If you have read my original post please read the posts below carefully.RegardsRoss B

Is this wot you are refer'n to Ross??"Wot I'd normaly do is yank the stick from side to side, but I didn't have the tree clearance to do it this time. This'll arrest the forward speed quickly but not wash off any rrpm, providing a softer landing."It's a bit different to wot your "quoteing" init.If your go'n to quote someone, even a SCG, please don't change it.Theres no mention of the 'rate' of side stick inputs, only the amount,[yank'n] and theres a big difference.I may apply large stick inputs in some of me moves, but they are ALWAYS gentle.I wouldn't advise anyone to apply stick commands at anywhere near that rate.If it worked for you, good, but thats not wot I said.If the post was read properly, you would'v noted that the side stick wasn't an option, coz I didn't have any room to move sideways, meaning that when I wash off AS, I'm banking left right left..........[and some wunder why I don't post stuff like that].I'm not av'n a go at you Ross, just correcting a missunderstanding.Ignorance is bliss............but only till you realise you were. You can always get the answer you want, if you ask enough experts.

Ross, Thats far to violent to do any controll input in my books. Gentle does it, even in the application of power....Guys, you got to remember that Birdy flies in conditions all the time that could well challenge many pilots and his skill level is at what I would describe as being well above the average. If anyone is going to duplicate any of his more unusual manourver's then you need to MAKE sure you have the technique 100% from the man himself word for word, THEN, very slowly work your way into it.If at any time you dont feel comfortable, STOP !!Gyros, rotors and conditions vary greatly so what may work brilliantly for one, could well be very dangerous for another.Brian

A technique used by 3 axis ultralight pilots is to lower different stages of flap. But if the ultralight has no flap then another way to steepen the angle of descent is to kick out the tail and increase the amount of form drag produced by the fuselage, therefore allowing you to lower your nose steeper than usual, while still maintaining your standard descent speed. This can also safely be use on a gyro, as they to incorporate a tail. Regards Sam.
