Pete,Good advice on it being able to get air into them, valid point - I didn't think of that. Would you suggest the spat be made more shallow for this purpose?Tim,On the duct tape - it is pretty obvious it is a mock up, but the rest of it looks quite serious, you are excused.Cheers,Nicholas TomlinAlarmist - www.alarmist.com.au - we scare for you

My experience with wheel spats Nick is that they do look great but are a real pain when you need to get at the tyre or valve. When they are mounted low, you really have to cut a hole in the back of the spat to be able to get at the valve. Mounting them always presents a challenge usually resulting in them being a pain to get off when you have a flat to fix. Lower also means less room between spat and tyre and exacerbates obstructions jamming up and causing damage. Where Paul has positioned the spat for the photo is about right for looks and ease of being able to inspect the tyre. If it was on a faster aircraft then there would be merit in mounting it lower.PeteBairnsdale,Vic.

The spats look great , Paul . I did most of my testing off not very smooth dirt runway ( a sheep track thru the middle of a wheat paddock ) & had no problems with the spats - apart from the hassle of taking them off to mend a flat . I think they prevented a lot of little stones getting flicked up into the prop. I like the look of the undercarriage. Hoo roo

The u/c is using the centre sction of 2" X 1" RHS until we have the correct "ride". Then a new mould will be made, or the old one adapted to have the composite go from one wheel to the other. That u/c is an off the shelf ultralight item.Pete, how do you know how fast it is???Aussie Paul.[]www.firebirdgyros.com

I am sure you will design the FB to be fast in relation to other gyros Paul but I was meaning faster fixed wing aircraft when I made that comment. We must all accept that we fly draggy aircraft, a lot due to the rotor system, and add ons like wheel spats mean nothing really in the scheme of things other than looks.PeteBairnsdale,Vic.
