quote:Originally posted by pbradleyJust to throw the cat amongst the pidgeons, about 10 years back I owned a gyro with a 532 rotax and just to look after it I gave the motor the 2 stroke Slick 50 treatment. Next time I flew it was on a cross country trip to Phillip Island, (about 3 hours away). Got about an hour into the trip when I was brought down with a big-end failure. Still got a couple more applications of 2 stroke treatement somewhere in the shed if anyone is interested in trying it.PeteBairnsdale,Vic.Well Pete all I can say is that it probably saved you an engine failure on climbout!!!![]Aussie Paul.[]www.firebirdgyros.com

Pete, I'm with Paul there, there is no way slick 50 caused a big end failure !BrianPooncarie NSW

I have not run any additives since the "B" box days but I intend to run some in the gearbox. I feel that if I hade run it in the Hirth I may have gotten more than the 550 hours of trouble free operation. I do suspect though that I should have changed the gear box oil more often, especially running 130 hp though the 110 hp g/box. Other than changing oil I had not one ounce of a problem with the Hirth. They are a tough gearbox. I have a guy making ej-series backing plates and flywheels for a couple of mates and I am waiting to see if he will produce more, and at what price.Aussie Paul.[]www.firebirdgyros.com

Thats fine Paul but I know of a couple of gyros that have C boxes and have got well over 500 hours out of them and give them a had time to boot !I must say that other than seals, I have had very little trouble since replacing "that" bearing every 250 /300 hours.BrianPooncarie NSW
